As the title suggests it looks as though I'm moving to Cardiff for a new job.
I used to be a student there five years ago (my god, its been a long time). I went back for the job interview, but otherwise I don't know too much about Cardiff anymore.
My work is in the cetre of town, near the Thistle Hotel.
I'm looking for information on where I can find about renting in Cardiff such as website listings etc or any other methods. Also if people have information on the "good" areas of Cardiff (I used to live in Cathays as a student).
Also if people have information on rental prices, etc.
Basically any information or points in right direction would be really, really, really helpful!
Thanks

I live in Cardiff (Whitchurch) and think it really depends on what you want. If its just you, and your paid a fair wage (ie, more than say £15K) then you should look at the apartments in the bay area. Otherwise I'd stay away from Ely, Riverside, Grangetown, Splott/Adamsdown. If you're looking for value for money it may be worth renting outside Cardiff and commuting as Cardiff isnt that big and many places that are a darned sight cheaper than Cardiff can be reached within 20 minutes by car.
Try these:

Give me some more information (Just you? rough budget? car owner? etc) and I'll have a better idea of what would suit you.

Hi
I will be on over £30k before tax (about £1,850 a month take home). Not a car owner, but will be looking to buy a car. However I don't think they have car parking where I work (Park Place). I would prefer to stay near town though.
The Bay area? Is it easy to get into town? Would it be walkable or by public transport (bus or train?)
I have no idea what rents are like in Cardiff.
Forgot to mention, it will be just me. I will probably consider flat share though, as it may be a bit cheaper."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
It sounds like a dream job. You might find/remember the rugby commentary a little one sided. You might consider renting cheap Summer University student/ conference accomodation for a week once you have a set of living accomodation targets.

i guess it all depends on what you want for your money.
if you are after somethng modern and trendy but costly, then look towards the bay
if you want more room for your money, you'd probably get a 2-3 bed house in splott/grangetown/cathays for what you'd pay for a studio in the bay
some websites to consider:

https://www.peteralan.co.uk
http://www.rhseel.co.uk/home/
http://www.coark.co.uk/rural/houses.htm
http://www.mgy.co.uk/content/public/rent/
another thing to consider is areas just outside cardiff, say penarth, dinas powys, barry, all of which are in commuting distance and quite well served by public transportknow thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
In the passed few days the council have announced they are going to be rejigging parking in the town centre, so if you commute in it's going to be hard to park during an entire work day, especially near the Thistle.
The bay to the town centre would take about an hour to walk, although there are some buses.
In the Cathays area 1 bed flats are going for 450ish+ a month.0 -
To get bigger rooms for the same or less rent as in Cardiff live in Lower Penarth/Cogan (1 railway station)
Barry - 4 railway stations and trains every 20 minutes
Estate/Letting agents - Park, Darlows, Alan & Harris, Chris Davies
Penarth - 2 railway stations
Agent - Peter Mulcahy
Good luck and welcome back! The best way to escape a problem is to solve it :j0 -
Thanks for the info everyone.
I'm actually taking a bit of a pay cut to move to the regions, but then its the whole quality of life issue, etc.
In reality I would prefer to stay in town, I'm done with the whole commute thing (especially after working in London).
I always thought Cathays was a bit of a student area. Is that still the case, or are there working people living there as well? Also will the quality of accomodation be "studenty"?
It seems a flat share would work out cheaper. Also as I'm moving pretty much new back to Cardiff (I only know one or two people there, seems most of my university friends have moved on) I thought with a flat share it would be a better way of meeting people. Another reason is it seems a flat share is cheaper than renting a one bedroom place."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
I'm so Jealous, I would love to move back to my university town
Flat share is definitly the way to go, but look for youung professionals not students as its a different world. Save save save!!0 -
Hi guys
Thanks for the links to where to look.
Just wanted peoples thoughts on these places: City Wharf, Atlantic Wharf, Century Wharf, Lloyd George Avenue, Landmark Place, Altolusso?
If I decide to rent a place on my own (I'm still considering this option) is £500 pcm a fair rent in Cardiff?
Thanks again."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
landmark place st marys. centre of town easy parking most apartments I sold were with their own parking, safe area, 24 hour concierge, 2 lifts to all floors, lots rented out, some just for weekends etc.
Only major problem is the apartment furnished? if not the the only lifts for taking furniture up are the same as normal lift so can be hard work.my bark is worse than my bite!!!!!!!!0
