You have really disillusioned me now as I took it for granted that the panasonic would do everything that my Morphy Richards can do - only better!

The panasonic SD253 DOESN'T make jam - but the bread is rather nice0

The Panasonic does not make jam, but if you have a pressure cooker you can make jam......
I use 1lb of fruit to 1lb of sugar, put the fruit in a bowl and pour the sugar over, leave ovenight, tip into the pressure cooker, stir until the sugar has melted, bring to the boil and keep it at a rolling boil until setting point is reached..... A saucer in the fridge, take the jam off the heat and put a teaspoonfull of jam on the saucer, leave it for a few minutes, if it wrinkles its setting, pour into warm jars, cover and label. If it does not wrinkle when you try it bring it back to the boil for another couple of minutes and test again. If you get scum forming on the top of the jam put a small knob of butter in, it will disipate the scum.
This makes a jam similar to the french conserve, it should carry a govenment warning its very morish........stawberries do not have much pectin, you can use sugar with added pectin, which helps the jam to set, Certo from the supermarket or the juice of a lemon has the same effect.

I want to make jam now as much as i want to make bread and pizza dough!
Hmm any other way of making jam without a bread maker of pressure cooker?!:starmod: :staradmin :starmod:I gave up jogging for my health when my thighs kept rubbing together and setting fire to my knickers:starmod: :staradmin :starmod:0 -
I think you can make it in a microwave, but you would need a very large bowl and can only make a small amount, if you have a very big saucepan you could try making it in that, you need the depth for the boiling process, the sugar does rise up quite a lot when its hot and will give you a nasty burn if it boils over, as well as makng a mess of the stove.

Absolutely, just use a big saucepan. I use an old pan (the bottom of an old pressure cooker, if that gives you the idea of size). You can get gorgeous, fancy preserving pans, but they cost a lot.
Most recipes you find for jam won't require a breadmaker or a pressure cooker, just a pan, and they'll tell you how to check for the readiness of the jam, too...0 -
there are some absolutely foolproof recipes for all sorts of jams in a cheap paperback you can get from Smiths called 'the Right Way to make jams'
Highly recommendedIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

Nigella Lawson's Domestic Goddess book has loads of jam and marmalade recipes which are really easy - no straining thru muslin etc. Most of the recipes are small quantities so there's a small initial outlay and it doesn't matter too much if you get it wrong! I have to say though that I haven't made a mistake with her recipes yet.
Your local library should have a copy of the book. In particular the Pink Grapefruit marmalade is divine!0 -
