Dilemma over a 'new seller'

Hi :)

I've recently started buying on ebay again, after my paypal went skwiffy on me ;) but I bid for, and won, an item from a new seller, although they aren't exactly newly-registered.

After I'd won the item, and paid for it, I received a message via my ebay saying that they expected more money than the item went for, and would I pay the extra (off ebay I suspect? I don't know tbh) which would have made the item approximately 3 times more than I'd won it for.

Whilst I was replying to their question, my money was returned to me. I was quite annoyed at the fact that they'd returned the money before waiting for my reply, and told them so, and added that I was thinking about reporting them. I then received another message telling me how sorry they were, they were new, and they *had* 'offered the item to me at another price' ! (I should be so happy, lol).

It wasn't an expensive item, and I'd prefer not to say what it was, or who was concerned, so I thought I'd just ask for your advice.

It's occurred to me that this seller could have had a plausible excuse for not knowing what they were doing, but it's also made me question, (as a non-seller), whether a new seller would have the knowledge, or the cheek ;), to do what they did. Hope that makes sense?

The dilemma is: should I report them? I'm not interested in the item, but I'm worried that it may happen again if I don't report it. Or should I just leave them a negative?

Thanks in advance :)

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place.

  • Report them as a NPS and leave them negative feedback.

    What a cheek!!!!

There is no way that they can do this. If they've made a mistake in the listing, not put a reserve on, or failed to put the start price at a level they're happy with, then tough luck! As soon as they realised this, they should have cancelled then amended their listing.

Youd bid is a binding agreement to pay - you've not agreed to pay more.

Without doubt I would contact eBay about this who will then give the seller an opportunity to sort it out, then if the matter is not resolved then leave negative feedback.

If they were hoping to avoid higher eBay fees by listing it at the correct price, then eBay will take a dim view - rightly so.

    Good luck!

I just took a quick look at eBay's help page:

If your seller changed the terms of the sale after the end of the listing, for example, they've asked for a different payment method or increased the delivery charge, please report the seller. You should send us any emails the seller sent you regarding the change, along with the email headers.

Thanks V_Tricky :) The fact that they didn't set a higher price, if that was what they wanted, did make me wonder if they were a new seller, as did their the cheek lol, because I can't see what they hoped to gain by doing what they did! :)

The more I think about it, the more I think they might be new. It doesn't make sense does it? I've got over 100 feedback, had very minor problems etc, but never had to report anyone to ebay before. I'm not sure where to start tbh :D

Edited as I've just seen your second reply - thanks! :)

This is the report form you need:

    http://contact.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ContactUs&wftype=2016&rcode=IV%25P20073&subject=Seller%20Non-Performance&bcrumb=+Home+%3E+Help+%3E%A0Rules+and+Policies%A0%3E%A0Rules+for+Sellers%A0%3E%A0Seller+Non-Performance&instruction=&expirationDate=

Can we put this in useful links perhaps? I seem to post it about once a week and with the search function down, I have to search ebay's wretched help pages for it each time.... sigh!

Definitely report them, their behaviour is not that of a good ebayer!

We have all sold things that went for less than expected but a decent seller does not pull out of the deal.

Thanks dotchas, and fancy seeing you here - or me! lol :D

I realise they were probably contravening a few rules, and tbh, if they'd have received what they were expecting, they'd have been a very lucky seller imho :) I'll see how the day goes and whether my mood improves ;) before taking it any further.
