I cant afford it - Why dont people believe me?

I live too far away from work to socialise - yippee! bit drastic though and costs a lot in petrol...

I do get constant questions about holidays and doing up my flat.
Q "why aren't you going anywhere???" A" eh, because I want to pay off debts, tart this place up and move soon."
Q "but we've just done x or y and we're off to blah, blah surely you could get away somewhere?" A."NO!"
Does annoy me as they all get paid more and are married with two incomes so even without the debt I couldn't keep up! do they have no sense??

People don't like to see others pulling ahead of them financially. If you don't over-extend yourself with things you can't afford, you might wind up paying off your debts, owning your own property, investing, - horrors- being better off than them!

Who the hell do you think you are?!?!!!!

It's like the crabs (forget the exact species) - if they all get caught in the same cage, if one starts crawling for the exit, the rest of them grab her and pull her back quick sharp...:cool:

Last week the office were talking about going out for a meal one evening, so when I was asked I said I couldnt really afford to go out for a meal, this month but that didnt seem good enough, instead they decided I didnt want to socialise with them!

Does anyone have any advice on how to get round this problem?
Why cant I say I can not afford to do something and it be understood?

Someone said they developed a wide-spectra of food intolerances...join them for drinks before or afterwards and just have a glass of water because of the food colouring / alcohol intolerance/allergy?
