Mondeo is probably the better option out of the two.

Cavaliers were much loved, but not so the Vectra.

It is sad that the Vectra has been tarnished by the pre-2002 model which was awful, for me the post 2002 model until the launch of the new Mondeo was the clear winner. But like all choices in car it is about what you find comfortable for the type of driving you plan to do.
At the period you are looking at purchasing from 2003-ish the Vectra won Family Car of the year so it depends if you plan to drive hard into corners then buy the Ford.

From new I picked the Vectra over the Mondeo, slightly better vision to the rear corners thanks to a window rather than wide pillar was what eventually made me pick the Vectra. I notice the latest version of the Mondeo has returned to more glass in the rear pillars - an admission of the flaw perhaps?

The 1.8 petrol on the Vectra works very well and needs maintenance only every 20000/2years so may save you in the long term. The cruise control on the Vectra works very well and will save you fuel, maintains a legal speed and makes the whole driving experience very relaxed.

having had both cars i would say vectra, look like i am in the minority though, i have had 3 mondeos(granted all over 10 years old) were good, but our current car which is a P reg(1996 i think) vectra estate is by far the best car we have had, never let us down in the 3 years we have had it, even better had it`s mot last week, only cost £4 to get thru for a new bulb, not bad for a car at least 10 years old, dave.

Sometimes older models are better. I had a V reg Corsa from 1 year old until just over a year ago. I loved it, it was a great little car and never needed any work on it apart from new bits of exhaust which were really cheap. I loved it so much I was just going to buy a 12 month old Corsa after I sold it. Took one for a test drive and hated it. Ended up buying a Fiesta which I had never fancied but test drove one and bought.
