Bidding For Council Properties

Hi There,
Im finally on the council housing list as Im in private rented property. Although unsuitable and classed as a 1bedroom the council will not house me and DS. The way the council operates in housing tenants is by putting you in a band ie A top priority B priority, C I assume not so priority and the bottom one is non priority.
I have moved up from non priority to band C due to medical problems which basically means that I have to be housed with somewhere with a lift. Every thursday properties are advertised by magazine and online of available homes although there is not many.In a month you will be lucky to get to actually see a property that is in band C but for higher bands there are more homes. Basically you make a bid on the property if its in your criteria.
Are there any council tenants who have managed to get housed this way? I know all councils are different and operate differently but does anyone know how the bidding works?100's are on the list from what Ive been told, so hundreds must apply then so how does one get chosen for a property? I have asked this to the council but they did not tell me so if anyone has any experience in this or knows how it works please, id appreciate it if you could tell me.
Thanks

The bidding system is fairer. In the olden days you had to wait until you got to the top of the list and were then offered the next suitable place. But you might hate it. You could say "no thanks" and then you'd have just one more allocation - and you had to take it or you'd be dropped from the list.
So potentially everybody was being housed where they didn't want to be.
With the bidding, it means you get some choice where you want to be and then the property is given to the bidder that was nearest the top of the list.
So it's a better system really. It means you can completely NOT be in a whole bunch of areas you don't want to be in - rather than being forced to take what they offer you.
And, even if 100 people bid on a property, if you are higher than them on the list you'd get it. Even under the old system people below you on the list wouldn't have been housed before you.
It's win:win0 -

Hi Ally.
There is currently only one 4 bed available on the Sussex lists. They are very rare.0 -

When you say you need 4 beds, would a 3-bed with 2 separate living rooms count as the 4th bedroom?0 -
hi south coast and pastures new, yes we would able to bid on a 3/4 bed house with 2 separate living rooms, but the are also very rare in a small town where we are1634 # 4 th jan £16.00 in sealed pot:j

homeview is the scheme in the cotswolds isnt it?
we signed up with them before our daughter was born 2 1/2 years ago cause we couldnt stay in our accommodation with children (OH was pub manager and we lived at his work).
they told us the wait would be 3 years at the least!!! and that was with silver banding for 2 bed properties, so I can well imagine how long you have been waiting for a 4 bed, there aren't many around that arent privately owned and rents on 4 beds are just silly money around here.0
