I regret believing my teacher who said I was rubbish at maths and as a result having fear of numbers and decimal points for so long (including money and bills).

I'll second that, although I can't blame any teacher - I just had a mental block with numbers for so long and I told myself that I couldn't handle them. I also was actually scared of money and so just tried not to think about it.

I saw an old friend the other day and she couldn't believe how obsessed with money saving I am - not sure if that's a good thing or not

    • Being completely useless with money for years and years and taking the view that we work hard, we deserve eveything our little hearts desire whether we can afford it or not.
    • Throwing out £100s in food that was past its use by date.
    • Too many takeaway meals and meals out to admit to.
    • Not attempting to overpay on the mortgage until age 35 when I had my first mortgage at age 19!
    • Listening to a finacial adviser who was at the time a so called friend who tempted us into a crappy mortgage deal (when I was 19) which we later found out paid him the highest comission.
But...I have seen the light and will leave my regrets behind me and as my signature says.....Don't keep looking to the past, you're not going that way!
But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.
  • Biggest regrets are:

Not realising this site had a forum area until very recently

Only just realising you can over pay on your mortgage -

Paying for 9 years into a useless mortgage life assurance policy (took out at same time as previous mortgage) to discover you have to pass 2 out of 6 "tests" to qualify for a pay out!!! Useless

I thought i was a pretty shrewd and cost cutting person but this whole site has openend my eyes! If only i'd have realised sooner.

    Thanks for this site!!!!!

Regretting anything is a waste of valuable energy. Looking back at something and using it as a valuable life experience is a far better use of your time, so no i have no regrets but i have learned a lot from past experience.

Not keeping hold of my wife's (at the time girlfriend's) house when we bought one together 8 years ago.

Strictly, the mortgage company would have given us our loan based on my salary, so she could have kept the old mortgage/house on.

Said house is worth about 2.5-3 times as much as we sold it for now...
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

  • We make the best decisions available to us at the time, whether or not they look good in hindsight.

So let's not beat ourselves up. There's more to life than money.

This board has a reputation as being one of the most boring on MSE so what's the harm in trying to liven it up a little?
