I bought a Breville one last year (itabout 4.7l I think) and doesnt have a timer on it - but to be honest I have never found that I needed one. We pop it all in in the morning and put it on low during the day and it is all done by the time we get home.

In my experience a timer on the plug is just as good as spending extra money on a built in timer - I have my coffe perculator on a wall timer so that when I get up in the morning my coffee is already made :D It saved me £50 which is how much the one with a built in timer was!

I love my slow cooker - we are a family of 4, me two teenagers (almost) and DH is 6ft 4 and an ex rugby player, so I am the one with the small portion and they all eat for Britain! I find that I can do a joint in the slow cooker and can get at least 2 meals out of what I cook for everyone, sometimes more, so it definately stretches my budget out (it also means I can get more veg into them as they just eat stew whatever :T) Mine has a removable ceramic dish that goes in the dishwasher as does the lid so is also really easy to clean.

Can anyone say what a Remoska slow cooker is like? One of the reasons I think a slow cooker would be useul for us is that we've just bought a campervan and it only has a 2 ring gas hob so potentially, the slow cooker could give us more cooking facilities. The campervan community all seem to rave about the Remoska but it's £100  Why would I want to buy one of these rather than a £20 from Argos, I wonder?

I don't have one (yet!) but there's a whole thread on here somewhere all about the remoska! Here it is. Also some others that may help:
Pressure Cooker, Remoska or Slow Cooker?
Not sure i like my new Remoska.!

Thanks for that WBH I'll check them out. My front runner at the moment is the Breville, a Which? Best Buy. Its £30 in Argos atm

"The Best Buy Breville VTP043 slow cooker is the 5.5-litre version of the Breville VTP062. This smaller model can still cook for up to six people - but it weighs less. It produces tasty and appealing stews, with slightly thicker sauce than the VTP062 version.

This slow cooker creates excellent food, and we found sauces reduced down more than in the VTP062, making the sauces richer."

Hmmm, it looks like the Remoska is something completely different from a slow cooker - now I have to decide which will be the most useful for home and campervan...

    Hi,
can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced slowcooker? I have never bought/used one before so have no idea which to go for or where best to buy one ....any recommendations?

    Cheers!

I bought one from Asda last year - it was one of the bigger ones and it was about £12=£15 IIRR. It works a treat.

I bought this one a couple days ago http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4228709/Trail/searchtext%3ESLOW+COOKER.htm

Used it once so far and very pleased with it.

I love my Crock Pot slow cooker. It's more expensive than the budget slow cookers, but it can also be used on the hob (handy if you want to brown your meat first-you don't have another pan to wash) and in the oven as well.

    It also looks good. :)

I've had mine for about 5 or 6 years now.

    Hi tanmu,

Which slow cooker you buy will depend a lot on the size of your family. There are five of us and we have the Morphy Richards 6.5ltr which is great for dishes with potatoes etc included or if we want leftovers and also a much older Tower 3.5ltr which is perfect for cooking meat only dishes and cooks more slowly.

This thread may help you to decide what suits you best:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the replies together.
