I have just waded through all the posts for SC. I have used mine again after a very long break and it was very good. I`m puzzled why anyone would cook porridge in it when a microwave only takes two minutes for old style porridge ( not the quick stuff)
  • I have really wanted a slow cooker for ages - but can't really afford one. On another thread one in argos was mentioned for £9-99 - a 3.5litre one which seems a good price.

I have been trying to borrow one to see if we would get any use out of one - but no one i know has one.

There are 2 adults, a 12 year old 4 and 2 year old in my house so i think this might be a little small - but it is rare that we all eat together [H gets in too late for the littlies to be eating] so i thought it might work to cook our meal then do the babes pasta or whatever - then another day do them something in it and us something out of it iyswim.

I am really tempted by this cheap one - does anyone have one and would it be feasible to use it like I am suggesting? Not ruling out getting a larger one later if i think we would use it - just feel that spending more on something i have never had experience of might be a good idea [I am a total slow cooker virgin :o as my mum never had one either]

thanks for any advice you can give me - i am feeling inspired to really go for OS now it is the new year :D

My slow cooker is the best buy i have made for a long time, so easy to make stews and casseroles, there are some great recipe ideas on the OS recipe threads!!!!
  • I've just bought the argos £9.99 one and am using it for the first time today. I've managed to get a quite large (easily for 4 people) brisket in there with room to spare. I don't think you'll have a problem with it's size. Will keep you posted on how tonights meal is.

I have 6.5 l SC which I don't use nearly enough, but when I do I feed 5 from it generously.Slow cookers are perfect for families who eat at different times as you can leave them on low for a couple of hours beyond the cooking time without the meal spoiling. So, you could feed your littlies and leave it on for late arrivals. I got a Hinari Lifestyle one just before Christmas for just over £6 using a code on the board.....wish I'd done a bit more research, as it is tiny........only 1.5l....only the two of us, but even so it will only hold a small amount and I'd have to do extra stuff on the cooker anyway.......sigh.....ah well, it was nice with the rice pudding and I've bought some chicken thighs and two (small!!!!!!!) pieces of brisket to try over the next few days.
