That's a good point about shorter cooking time! Thanks0 -

My SC handbook says you're not supposed to fill them more than about 2/3 full anyway.0

Thank you for this great tip rachbc! Like the best of ideas - so simpleyet effective!
I am still using my ancient, enormous slow cooker but now both [STRIKE]gannets[/STRIKE] dd's have left home, its only used for batch cooking big batches when I strike lucky with 'whoopies'.
I was debating whether to buy a smaller one for everyday use - but this will solve my problem and save me money!0 -
FWIW, I had a smaller one (3L) and found that a lot of things just wouldn't fit in there. Whole chicken and chicken legs for instance. Oh and some chops, just didn't fit. In the end, we were given a large one and kept the smaller one for mulling wine. The large one is used a lot more than I ever used the smaller one."Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'

Bought our son a 6.5 litre one for his 21st! (his request) he uses it to pre-cook and then store lunches during the week.
One fill accounts for 3 lunches! Usually a mix of chicken, beans, broccoli, cabbage and whatever else he can find!0 -
I think I read somewhere that a slow cooker has to be at least half-full (?). If you don't want to shell out for a smaller one, then maybe just make larger quantities, as others have suggested.
I use a diddy one (1.5 litres, I think) and it seems about right for 1 or 2 people.0 -
Can anyone recommend a cheap slow cooker. Mine has now stopped working, but I can't complain, it has done me proud for years.
Thank you in advance for this - I don't know how I would go on without a slow cooker these days!Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -
My only recommendation is not for a brand....... just look out for one at car boot sales. You see them all the time for a few quid. Mine cost me £2 and I love it!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

Hi sybil,
I've added your thread to our main thread on which slow cooker to buy. If you read from the last page back then you'll see the most recent recommendations.
