I'm pretty sure there's at least one thread in that list on how to make yoghurt without a yoghurt maker.
Anyway - have fun browsing. An update.
After straining the whole batch of fresh-milk yogurt (using those cone-shaped yogurt strainers you can buy at Lakeland) I gave it all a good whisk and the curdled appearance has disappeared.
I'm now enjoying it with some rhubarb compote, made with locally grown forced rhubarb. C'est delicieux !
The whey that I was left with is in the fridge awaiting a bread-making session. It is very nutritious apparently.0 -

My question is- is this how it is supposed to be, and should I just stop worrying and enjoy it as it tastes delicious ? Or, am I doing something wrong, and is there a way to get smooth yogurt ?
When I started making yogurt I did it like this and had the same resultI strained it and made a lovely thick yogurt, but moved rapidly onto UHT milk. Maybe I'll give this method a try again.

I have a yoghurt maker with the 6 little jars - charity shop find - and in the leaflet that came with it, it says that UHT milk gives the best results, as something in the milk is destroyed that can stop it yogging. It recommends that if you want to use fresh milk, that you scald it reallly well and then let it cool - which is what you're doing anyway I think.
I use UHT milk anyway as the Lactofree tastes better in UHT than in fresh (maybe Tesco don't store the fresh properly??)“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

Hello Guys
Making yoghurt is very easy.
Boil some milk bring it to boil. Once that is done switch off gas and leave it for a while to cool it down.
The milk should be luke warm and then take a spoon and just dip spoon in plain yoghurt which you should buy from supermarket (plain yoghurt,) when I say dip all that is required in say 2 pints of milk is ilttle less then a peas. Just tiny bit. and stir the milk and cover it and leave it in a warm place overnight next day it should set. If in the morning it has not just leave it till afternoon or evening it will set. Once you see water on the side it is done.
Excuse me the way I have writtten but this works wonders. Once this is done you keep taking the yoghurt from here for next setiing. This goes on and on and money saving !0 -
Hi everyone
I just found this recipe hope it helps
pour 500ml milk into pan and whisk 30g of dried skimmed milk powder in.
then heat milk and stir gently (recipe says 46oC)
pour milk into bowl whisk in yoghurt 2-3 tbsp
then cover bowl with clingfilm and put it somewhere warm
check in 6-8 hours or overnight, if its still runny leave another hour or two

Wow guys,
After reading LOADS of yogurt making threads yesterday I made yogurt for the first time last night. It was soooooo easy (in fact my 3 year old did the main bit of work!) and it worked! I LOVE this website and all of you guys. I have been taught how to do so many great things by you all.
We usually have to buy Value yogurts which are 58p for a litre. Last night I made a litre of organic yogurt for £1. How fantastic is that? Its a price difference that our budget can stretch to and the yogurt will be soo much better for us with fewer additives and it has to be more nutritious being so fresh.
I just brought a litre of milk to the boil and then turned off the heat. Let it cool to 36 degrees (used baby thermometer to check temp:p). My 3 yo added 2 tablespoons of yeo valley natural yogurt and stirred it in. We then poured it into a wide-mouthed flask and left it on the kitchen unit over-night.
This morning I had hazlenuts in mine and the boys and DH had blueberries and honey. Delicious!
Thanks again to all. :TTess x

That's great, otterspasm, and a great price, too! The cheapest organic milk that I have found is the Calon Wen in a bag

Hi Seakay
I used Co-op's own brand...92p a litre. I then added a few pence on for the 2 tablespoons of yogurt I used to start it off. The difference in quality between the value yogurt and this homemade is massive. I'm converted!
I see you live in Cardiff...I lived there in the late 80's when I was a student - LOVE it and miss it.
Cheers
