£50 for ANY old mobile from O2

Heres my first post and it's a tip to get you £50 for ANY old mobile phone. I must add that I haven't personally had it as (a) I'm not thick skinned enough to do it and (b) If I was, my wife wouldn't let me:o . I'm 100% positive that it will work so please, someone go for it!
Today I have just bought my wife a new PAYG phone from an O2 shop. The phone I purchased was a Motorola V8 flip phone. It was priced instore at £129.99 but on this phone, O2 stores are allowing £50 p/x on any old phone. I took up this offer and produced a very old Sony CMH333 phone - They used to be known as a Sony Mars Bar due to being the same size as a Mars Bar. It must have been nearly 15 years old and they currently go for around 99p on eBay.
Anyway, I handed over the phone and I had to sign a till reciept to confirm that I had recieved £50 trade in for it. I got my new phone for £79.99 (plus I had to buy a £10 top up but you can claim a refund on this provided you dont use any of the credit). When I left the shop I examined my reciept and clearly printed on that was a statement that by trading in your handset you are agreeing to transfer ownership of the handset to O2 for recycling and a few other conditions basically confirming that there is no personal data left on the phone, the sim has been removed, O2 can dispose of it etc. but the ones you will be interested in are the final 2 conditions and I'll type these exactly as they appear on the reciept;
4. I understand that in the case of any subsequent refund, this handset cannot be returned to me and a refund will be given to include any allowance obtained by transferring ownership of this handset to O2 UK.
5. I UNDERSTAND THAT TRADE-IN HANDSETS CANNOT BE RETRIEVED OR RETURNED TO ME UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
All you have to do now is to return your recently purchased Motorola handset under the 14 day returns policy, claim a refund on what you actually paid for the phone and according to their own terms, also claim back the £50 trade in allowance for your p/x phone as they cannot return it. Easy peasey.
Let me know how you get on!

was the phone you traded in on o2 payg by any chance? it might be that you got £50 off if you had been using the old one with regular top-up. this is effectively how they judge the trade in value. people who dont use it often might get £10 off, etc etc.0

Very interesting!

Nope. The phone I traded was so old it was an analogue phone! The manager of the store told me they would accept ANY old phone. Unlike other such trade in offers that I have seen, they don't even require that it's working, has a charger, the box or the instruction manual. :j0 -
Unbelievable!
So, in effect, one could purchase a PAYG phone for a tenner/cheapest available price, do your little scam then come away £40 richer?
Then repeat this in numerous o2 stores!
Wonderful!0 -
The way I read it, you could keep on doing it in the SAME O2 store without leaving the premises (assuming you took a healthy supply of old phones in there with you).

I like your thinking. Very clever.
Of course you'd need to at least leave the store before changing your mind and asking for a refund!

I would have a go at this, but I am not back in the country till July.
I would probably feel as cheeky as I did when I demanded R+R on my XBOX console in Tescos over a year ago.. but it felt oh so good.

this sound good to me. i need a new phone. so i can go into an 02 shop, and basically get £50 off any phone i want providing i take an old one with me? i have plenty of old phones around.0

Sounds very interesting!
Remember that according to the law, they don't have to provide a refund unless it's faulty. Although they do in this case, they could get narky if you really abused the offer and eventually refuse you a refund. Unlikely though! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Doesn't it mean that the refund you will be given takes account of the discount that you have already received because of the trade in: ie in this case 79.99 and thats your lot?
I would be interested to see if anyone makes this one stick!0
