one other thing - don't use the current heatsink/fan unless sure it is beefy enough, the sink/fan i had on my duron 1.3 was no way going to be good enough and that was the amd one that came with it. Check a junk pc shop they are dirt cheap or if desperate pm me i'll have one somewhere, just pay us back posrtage.

Thanks for the tip, the fan is included in the sale, but I've only got the duron heatsink.

junk pc shop, around here? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I can think of a couple of people that I can contact and maybe sort something.

    Thanks again R

I'd imagine that by 'fan included' it does actually mean 'fan and heatsink included' - the fan is usually attached to the heatsink so it would be very strange for someone to separate them. AMD and Intel have sold their retail processors with heatsinks and fans for a few years now. Wait and see what's included before worrying...

It has actually turned up with heatsink and fan.
I've also got someone looking in his cupboard for one, so could end up spoiled for choice!
So will mix and match to get best cooling solution.

Do you still think it's worth updating the BIOS or wait and see?

it won't need a bios update, you may need to change some bios settings though to get it to run at the correct speed.

    Thanks for that.
In an earlier post you suggested an AXDA2600DKV3C, now I have an AXDA2400KV3C, is the fact the 2nd D is missing of any significance?
After Googling it appears there is also a AXDA2400DKV3C.

    Cheers R

Thanks all for the above advice. :D

XP2400 in and running for a week, the heatsink and fan (standard AMD) that came with it gives the best cooling, despite the fact that it is the smallest fan (60x10mm).

The old Duron had an Arctic Cooling HS&F (BIL had the original PC custom built for his company).

This had an 80mm fan which I've rigged as a case fan (didn't have one previously).

AMDs all run hot but now in line with the old Duron, 44c (idle) and can't get it above 52c.

Performance is fine for my needs, biggest difference is loading Excel pages.

I'd say when surfing it's now miles faster than a £350+ tower (AMD dual core/Vista/1gb RAM) I had to admire the other evening.

Mind you he does insist that he has to use the AOL browser because he's on AOL, also MacAfee

I also had a look at the XP2600 this seems to be disproportionally expensive in terms of speed/£.

So delighted (fingers crossed) at the moment.

    Thanks R
