I use a Gigabyte-GA7 vkmls motherboard with an AMD Duron 1.3 socket A, with 768mb RAM.
No real problems with performance for my needs, but a reply to one of my posts months back gave the XP 2400 as a cheap upgrade.
While looking around ebay, I decided to look for the XP 2400 e.g HERE . I have been lead to believe this will drop right in to my motherboard.
Is this correct? Anything else/problems to consider?
PC only used for email, surfing, few photos some spreadsheets and no games.

It'll support upto the 2600+ AXDA2600DKV3C, if getting a 2600+ you need to be sure it has this OPN code as it won't work with the 333fsb versions. It'll work with any socket A processor where the OPN code ends with letter B or C.0

yes i believe that they are both Socket A processors so would just drop in, have you changed a processor before? if not be carefull and seek info on doing it correctly. may i ask why you are upgrading if the system you have now is fine? i dont think you would notice much having upgraded. also wouldnt advise on getting a 2nd hand processor from ebay. prices have come right down on amd processors you would be amazed, invest in a new processor and motherboard - u will be able to get them cheap enough from here http://www.aria.co.uk/0

Then he'd probably also need new memory and graphics card, an XP2400+ would be a nice upgrade from a duron 1.3 and would cost very little, a second hand socket a processor should be fine if it's fully working and doesn't have any chips on the core.yes i believe that they are both Socket A processors so would just drop in, have you changed a processor before? if not be carefull and seek info on doing it correctly. may i ask why you are upgrading if the system you have now is fine? i dont think you would notice much having upgraded. also wouldnt advise on getting a 2nd hand processor from ebay. prices have come right down on amd processors you would be amazed, invest in a new processor and motherboard - u will be able to get them cheap enough from here http://www.aria.co.uk/0 -
Cheers guys
Yes, I could easily afford to buy a new PC, in fact I was almost tempted by a Dell offer widely posted about a week ago.
But that's not how I work, I'd rather put the money into the mortgage.
As I said before the XP2400 was suggested in passing as a good value for money upgrade.
marms you're right I'd need to upgrade other things, also my OS is OEM version, so while I would probably get away with a processor upgrade, anything more would mean a new OS.
The code of the xp2400 on ebay finishes with c, should be O.K.
It will also be a bit of experience, because I'm a relatively oldie, but have been only around computers a couple of years.
My present machine is an amalgam of about 4 different machines, all for zero cost apart from the OS.
If I mess up everything is backed up, and then I'll have to get something up to date.
One other thing I have to consider is that SDRAM memory is very expensive when compared to modern memory and my supply, retrieved from old machines is diminishing with the recent demise of a 512mb stick.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
You may need to update the BIOS of the motherboard before it will accept the new processor - check the manufacturer's website. It'll be strangled by the SDRAM if it on'y goes at 133mhz, are you sure it's not DDR? (256, 333 maybe). 768mb and the new processor will give you a really good PC for what you need though.0

I had 1.3 duron that I just got a xp2.6 that just slotted in & worked fine. Thing is 3 months later the mobo died. I found a new cheap (£20 end of stock) (not from ebay) socket a mobo which I bought and that has been great with my 2.6amd & it ook my old ram as well (just) . At least now i have a mobo that i can uprade the ram & cpu when i can, has usb2 onboard, better sound & agp8x graphics slot.Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0

Highly unlikely you'd need a new OS. The only thing that might trigger problems is a new motherboard. However in the past, over time, I've upgraded evrything on a PC except the PSU, case and floppy drive. I was always able to continue to use my OEM copy of windows. I had to phone Microsoft a couple of times but they were very good. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

I downloaded the mobo manual sometime back and it states athlon/xpathlon/duron, 1.4ghz and faster.
I've never updated the BIOS because of the horror stories I read, however if you can point me in the direction of a good tutorial/website etc. I'd be grateful.

That's reassuring, I put in a couple of tentative bids on ebay, after checking past sales, came home tonight, checked email and found I now have 2nd hand xp2400 for about the same price as 2nd hand stick of 256mb sdram.
Seller had 100% positive feedback, so fingers crossed.
Any issues with differing heatsinks? Or are they all the same? With AMD's reputation for running hot, did you upgrade the fan?
BTW the case is huge, about the size of a wardrobe, so plenty of air flow.

The OS thing was not a real concern, loads of posts on here suggest that MS are pretty easy going about genuine repairs/replacements.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
I bought cpu off ebay & that was fine. It had not been used in office environment. I had a sink and fan from a broken pc i got hold of. It took the old mobo to its top limit. Ithink that was what burned it out ( mobo). After years of running & then suddenly changing it may have had something to do with it. There was a socket a mobo cheap on novatech & i got one. You can still get it but it has gone up in price, it must have been an offer -http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/products/a557x1y0z1p0s0n0m0 Nothing special but great for me.
To get the free p & p i added a new fan/heatsink amongst other stuff. With the new mobo at least i know it is good for a few years. put a 128mb agp8 graphics in it. Doesn't seem to run hot certainly not as warm as the old board with the faster cpu. My old board had 2 1gig ram pc2100 which is good in the new one, though one of the sticks has since fizzed out (cheap generic stuff) but found a 512mb stick in the shed that seems ok
I'm happy with it and it deals with all i throw at it.Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -
I've just noticed that the one I've bought is axda2400kv3c, letter d is missing. It'll support upto the 2600+ AXDA2600DKV3C,
I've googled both numbers but can't make head nor tail of the info.
Both are on ebay with the same info so assume they're much the same.
Hope I've not got the British Leyland Ambassador version, (if you understand the reference you're old like me).:eek:Move along, nothing to see.0
