Council Tax by Credit Card - = cash?

My local council accepts payment by CC. Does anyone know whether this would count as a cash payment by a CC company or whether it is treated as a normal merchant spend?

I'd like to know this as well. My local council gives a discount for up front payment. So if I paid on a cc with 0% purchase interest I could save myself a bit of dosh.

I often pay mine via credit card using the council's online payment service (Medway council). Have paid via both Egg and Capital One, and every time it's been treated as a normal purchase, not cash.

Lucky you, I wish Edinburgh council would accept credit card payments but no chance. Hope yours don't change thier mind.

Mine used to, but stopped a few years ago, shame.

It always went through as a normal purchase - no reason why it wouldn't, really.

Thinking logically - I suppose Council Tax isn't like a gift voucher or betting, is it? (Better not give them ideas about another way of getting interest out of us.)

There's no mention of that on my council website but I wouldn't be surprised. As use of a CC is available only via telephone, I'll be able to ask before paying.

Or realise how much accepting CC payments is costing them. See post 8. Edinburgh are probably more switched onto this than others: you know what us Scots are like with money.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

If it's the same as my council thenthey do that for security reasons and it tells you what they charge on the phone line.
