Is there any where I could look for an idiot's guide to where to put the memory inside the tower and is it a case of just simply slotting it in.

If you know the model number of your PC then it's possible that going to Packard Bell's website and going to the "Support and Downloads" section will turn up a downloadable User Manual and possibly a Service Manual. This should tell you what spec memory to look for and how to install it.

Failing that, use the tool on the Crucial website, as mentioned further up this thread. It works fairly well, but is not infallible (it has failed for me in the past, but their guarantee meant that they refunded my money anyway).

I'm fairly sure that Crucial also have generic user guides for installing memory which should make the job easy enough.

This is the type I need. How can I tell if its High or Low Density I need?

    Module Size: 2GB kit (1GBx2)
    Package: 184-pin DIMM
    Feature: DDR PC3200
    Specs: DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.6V • 128Meg x 64

That spec is for High Density memory.

Always check with the seller to confirm compatibility.

    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Funky Giraffe may be "the cheapest" - but don't touch them even with someone else's bargepole. The RAM that they confirmed would fit my machine didn't; when I returned it they initially refused to refund the exorbitant postage charges and then claimed to have never seen the return (pretending to be in a huge depot with different departments allows them to make this sort of claim - in fact they only employ a handful of folks according to their company profile). Net result is that I am twenty quid out of pocket and they pontificated for so long that I couldn't even give them feedback on eBay. I sourced the product elsewhere and the postage was free - and the RAM was cheaper, too. And it worked! If in doubt contact Crucial - not the cheapest but they will confirm what will and won't work - and the you can find an alternate source ;-)
