My downstairs radiators get very hot-all over-my upstairs ones get hot-ish but only nearer the bottom.Do I need to bleed them. They do not have thermostatic valves,or any way of controlling them individually.Advice please. I have the boiler serviced once a year.

Sounds like they need bleeding to me. You will need a special key to do it. And don't forget if you have double radiators there will be two bleed points

I would try bleeding first, if they are still the same then it may be sludge, ther are systems cleaners that you can buy from DIY stores/plumbers merchants to clean this outEx forum ambassador

Simply........
With the upstairs radiators cold
Locate the bleed valve will be at the top of the radiator
Get an old cloth
Put the valve key on the valve and turn slowly anti clockwise about 1 full turn
DO NOT REMOVE COMPLETELY
You will hear a hissing sound if the rads need bleeding
Let the air out until water starts to come out
When water comes out re tighten bleed valve
Do the same with all the upstairs rads
Then run heating
If the rads then get hot at top job sorted
If not........
You will need to balance the system.....but thats another story
P.S.
Check the bleed valves for leaks in a couple of hours0 -
Thanks everyone0

Hi,
Sorry to hijack the thread...
I did all of that followed that exactly last week but still have the same prob ... although they are slightly better ... what is balancing the system ???
PS its not all the radiators just some ...0 -
Its just some of my radiators too.Has balancing the system got to do with re-setting the pressure on the boiler?0
