High Gas Bill - Help!

Johnny, I am pretty certain that you have been billed incorrectly.
The 981 units used are actually 981 cubic metres (with your metric meter). To convert these to KWh multiply by approx 11, this gives 10791 kwh., not the 30914 kwh that your bill states.
However I note that you have supposedly used this amount in 3 days!!! But the start reading was estimated. Have you had a lot of estimated bills which were perhaps underestimated and this is a catching up exercise?
Looks like you will have to speak to your supplier and tell them you have a metric meter and they are billing you for an imperial one.0 -
Johnny, I should have added that you will have been billed incorrectly since you joined Utility Warehouse. See my post that I have quoted, your consumption for last year was 15246 Kwh, and using your price per Kwh of 2.285p this comes to a total of £348. Not bad eh?notbritishgas wrote: »Johnyboy. Check to see if your meter is measuring Hundreds of Cubic feet or is a metric one measuring in cubic metres.
If you had it changed in Oct 05 then I suspect it is metric.Using this assumption, you have used from Jan 07 to Jan 08, 3503 minus 2117 which equals 1386 units, convert this to Kwh by multiplying by 11 and it comes to 15246 Kw. Using a very approximate average price of gas of 3.25p per Kw this gives a bill for the year of £495.
If your gas company have worked out (wrongly) your bill assuming it measures in Cubic feet then the bill will be approx 3 times bigger.
I hope I have done my sums correctly, but I am sure someone will check them!0 -
Thanks to everyone that posted in reply to my problem above - especially notbritishgas. I rang Utility Warehouse this morning and discovered they are billing me for an imperial meter. They are now getting someone to come out and verify that we do have a metric meter and then they will put it right. Big thanks again as I would never have thought of this as the problem, and would be still worrying about it now.

I'm glad you've managed to make headway into getting this sorted. :T
Sometimes we all look for a complicated answer, when in fact its simple and the last place we look.

Hi,
Recently moved to a new flat. Its only a 2 bed room flat 1 double 1 single about £650 sq ft. Only the girlfriend and I living there.
It's cost us £100p/m over January. This is more thandouble what we were paying before. Break down is as follows:
9582 open
9676 close
=92 used
First 213 kWhr*6.533 =13.92
Next 2740.37 kWh*3.319p = 90.95
total 104.84
Is this a potential miscalculation like Jonny above? Or am I just on a a bad price plan?
I'm on Click Energy 6 which was recommended by one of those comparison websites.

Well it says ft^3 on the meter, so I guess so.
Seems weird though such a step change in prices after I moved to a smaller flat?

Bad luck.
It was much colder this winter. Lots of people paid lots more this January than last.0 -
OK well at least I know now.0

So glad I have read these posts. I am having exactly the same problem with British Gas at the moment. My quarterly bill Oct-Dec left me £570 in debit. I then challenged B/Gas over this who suggested I be billed monthly in order to keep a check on my gas bill. In an attempt to reduce the gas debt I have purposefully gone WITHOUT central heating, relying on extra layers of clothing and an electric heater, I received a bill for £120 for one month. The debt has now gone up and my DD is over £70 per month.
All of readings have been actual ones, as i want to makesure I am paying for what I am using, however January's bill just baffles me.
Does anybody have any advice at all? I am currently keeping a 'diary' of what I am actually using in terms of gas i.e hot water for dishes/showers and using the cooker, in preparation for Feb;s bill.0
