they often supply sim-free ones (which have never been locked) with contract phones so wont be locked whereas payg ones will be
i believe cpw often supply sim free as well for contracts0 -
Hi there, I have just purchased a V3 on Orange and have just tried to use my Vodafone SIM but it came up with 'What is your subsidy No'. Any ideas?Stay lucky!0

V3 needs to be unlocked with the smartclip at a market or in a shop.0

o2 do not lock there phones at all. The phones are direct from Nokia/Samsung and o2 doesnt touch them, as they try to save money. You will find o2 phones are from direct from sim free stock.Kind Regards

O2 and Vodafone used to be the only networks that supplied unlocked phones, but since Voda started doing Vodafone Live handsets, they've started to be locked to Vodafone, leaving O2 as the only network to supply unlocked phones.
Orange & T-mobile have always done handsets locked to their network, except on occasions when CPW supplies Orange handsets, where there might be an option to get a generic GSM handset... e.g. black D500s.0 -
ahhh well.. maybe it was common knowlege then an im just behind the times, lol... sorry folks... really thought id had a good find there...

i have to disagree o2 do lock pay and go phones unless specified on purchase. more often than not contract ones are unloked.0 -
BT Mobile also do not lock their contract handsets. Virgin is a hit and miss situation, some contract handsets are locked while others aren't.My reality check bounced.0
