save over £5 with BT - caller display

The following is taken off the internet:

Many BT customers are paying £5.25 a quarter for its Caller ID service but if you sign up for BT’s new Privacy programme, then caller ID is completely free

Yet BT are still charging those users who signed up to Caller ID early on the fee. It also has no plans to automatically migrate these users onto its free service.

There is no charge whatsoever for BT Privacy and in addition to free caller ID you can also get signed up (if you choose to) to the free Telephone Preference Service which helps block unwanted sales calls.

BT has said any customers who inform them that they want to move off the fee paying caller ID to the new free service will be switched, thereby shaving £5.25 off their quarterly bill.

Thanks facingthefuture, wonder what the catch is?

Oh come on - you should know better - there is no catch apart from using BT for a couple of calls per month.

The OP is talking about the free Caller Display service that comes with BT Privacy - something they launched a couple of years ago and we have all spent ages discussing in the Home Phones forum.

    Regards

    Not how I read it.

Oh I see the really, really old caller ID service.

Yes - I expect in 6 months or so there will also be posts here saying 'I have been paying BT for Option 2 - but if you ask you can get it for free..*" so BT 'have been ripping me off'

(*suject to 12 month contract etc..)

    Regards

It's not free and people should stop saying that. It is free* if you use "*" and then tell people it's not actually free (and add why it's not free).

It's definitely not free. Just to make that clear.

That used to be true (although the 'required calls' each month would have cost less than the price of a stamp) but I think it can be said that things have changed recently.

Now that inclusive weekend calls (for those on the Unlimited Weekend Plan) or evening and weekend calls (for those on the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan) or anytime calls (for those on the Unlimited Anytime Plan) count as 'chargeable calls' for Caller Display and 1571, I suppose 'free' actually means 'free'.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Yup.

Even if you use BT to make occasional short chargeable calls, that aren't included via BT, instead of your chosen override provider, the difference would be pennies. So Caller ID is effectively "FREE" as it really doesn't cost you anything significantly more than your line rental (what's a penny or two between friends?). If every penny really is a prisoner, have a look down the back of your sofa and that will pay for your Caller ID for a few months.
No reliance should be placed on the above.

Well, it's still not "free" as I was charged (and got the money back after complaining). I know it's "free" for some (with a lot of small print essentially) but 10,000s former Privacy at Home subscribers must be paying every month and probably don't even notice.

I just don't like people repeatedly saying it's free when it ain't and BT wouldn't get away with it so people should try and follow their example. Being free for some ain't free.

Their T&C are clear enough, and have been well publicised by them.

"BT Privacy helps stop unwanted sales calls by registering you with the Telephone Preference Service and giving you BT Caller Display at no extra charge. From 1st October 2006, customers who do not make some chargeable calls with BT will be charged for BT Caller Display. Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Call er Display at no extra cost if the following calls are made. Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, other wise BT reserves the right to charge £1.75 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who are billed every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £5.25 a quarter."
