Selling shares?

How do I go about selling shares that have been bought for me? I've never dealt with shares and I found out that I was bought some when I was younger by my family and I would like to sell some of them.
I've read the article on the site but I am completely flumuxed by the whole thing.
Can anyone give me a VERY simple explanation of how to do it, and how long it takes for them to sell and for me to get my money!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If they're worth enough, you'll be able to sell them fairly quickly and get some cashback for it.I am a Chartered Financial Planner

Out of interest, do you have the share certificates for your holdings?
However, as Aegis says the Selftrade referral offer where it is possible to get £80 for joining Selftrade is available here - my own details are in post 282..

That means your Halifax shares are held in a nominee account.
In that case, Computershare will charge you somewhere in the region of £12-15 to transfer your Halifax shares to Selftrade or to give you a paper certificate.
That should not be a problem as Selftrade will refund you the fee (in addition to the referral offer) if you are transferring the shares electronically directly from Computershare to them - all you need to do is fill in a particular form on the Selftrade website but its something you should be aware of
You could always sell your shares via Computershare instead but that is likely to cost you a lot more in commission (as they are not cheap)..

I have been looking around my account on computershare, but I can't see where to sell the shares. In the 'share dealing' section it hs a list of shares that can be sold, but HBOS shares aren't on there.
Will it take long for the shares to be transferred to Selftrade?0 -

I believe it usually takes a week or two - it depends on how quick Computershare are in processing the request.
A Selftrade account can normally be opened within 10 minutes online, then you would need to send this form to Selftrade so they can ask for the shares from Computershare.
If you also wanted to transfer your Santander shares to Selftrade as well - as you have the share certificate, you would need to send a completed CREST Transfer Form to Selftrade along with your certificate.
Once the share(s) are registered with Selftrade, you could sell at any time and your Selftrade account would be credited with the sum 3 days later - and can than transfer it to your own bank account.
Note: the act of sucessfully transferring shares will trigger the Selftrade referral scheme - you don't need to sell them if you don't want too.

I'll speak with my partner and see what we decide to do - if we do transfer to selftrade then I would be interested in doing the referral thing with you!0 -
Also, which selftrade account do I need to open? And how does the referral work?0
