Mortgage Fees - Are they unlawful?

I take it you have missed all the previous threads on MSE over the years as to signatures and the mortgage advisor code? dunstonh is not a mortgage advisor but an IFA and therefore cannot use the MA code in his signature, however as Martin asks for users to make it clear if they have a knowledge of the subject they are discussing he has done this by putting it in his signature.
It is just this sort of accusation that have caused other IFA's to stop posting their help on MSE.0 -

Interesting that your first reaction is to report me - how mature of you. Shall I report you as well then? It seems to prove that certain people can't even stand a modicum of criticism (or don't like their relentless self-promotion to remain public.)
Sorry but digging up 2 week old posts to pick an argument is trolling by definition....
Constructive criticism is welcome by most. However, your post was hardly constructive, and was full of unfounded accusations and perhaps misrepresentation. Therefore I reported it.
Finally, please refrain from personal insults, since they really are completely pointless is this medium. In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0 -

Ok that's enough. Of many other people, yes, I may agree that every post could be seen as a possible business opportunity and reason for self advertisement. However, to say such a thing of this individual is actually almost as laughable as the concept of him needing the business from a chat forum.
There is no hierachy on MSE, no pecking order and certainly no 'sense of ownership' by those who have been around a while. It has to be noted though that without the contributions and help of the likes of dunstonh and payless the forums as they are today would simply not exist.
These forums have gone massively downhill over the last 6 months or so and now seem to be a place where people just want to ask the same questions about claiming back money for anything from mortgage fees to costs of flights etc without actually accepting any responsibility for their own actions, and a place for some to simply rant and throw mud at the qualified professionals who freely give their time to post on this board without anything in return.
This is a consumer site. Why therefore should IFA's and mortgage brokers not be allowed to freely post their own thoughts from an experienced and qualified standpoint, but on the basis that we are also consumers? We are not the only trades people that post offerings of help by way of answering questions in their chosen field of expertise, however you never see anyone accusing a builder of posting for advertisement when they openly say 'PM me for a quote'.0 -

Agree 100% - but it doesn't across that way to the newbies who get battered by "regulars" as soon as they ask a question. Plus the extreme reaction this particular "regular" concerned took to a bit of criticism, would no doubt have given many readers the impression that he did think he was above criticism. These forums have gone massively downhill over the last 6 months or so and now seem to be a place where people just want to ask the same questions about claiming back money for anything from mortgage fees to costs of flights etc...
Andrew, I'll answer this one respectfully, since you've posted respectfully unlike the irascible dunstonh. Once again though, I have to refer you to line 2 of the Forum etiquette. If newbies take that to heart and post accordingly, can we blame them? If you or others don't agree with that any more then surely the way forward is to contact ML and suggest amendments?
I don't think they've gone downhill - MSE a victim of its own popularitty maybe? Why therefore should IFA's and mortgage brokers not be allowed to freely post their own thoughts from an experienced and qualified standpoint, but on the basis that we are also consumers? We are not the only trades people that post offerings of help by way of answering questions in their chosen field of expertise, however you never see anyone accusing a builder of posting for advertisement when they openly say 'PM me for a quote'.
It's the line you draw between being on here to post or help, and self-promotion. The impression often given is that it is not selfless help but part of the business plan.
Oh, and if I did see a builder saying "PM for a quote" then yep, I would most certainly report it to Abuse and suggest everyone else did the same.0 -

Only spammers and self-publicists!If you look at dunstonh's recent posts (those that haven't yet been deleted) you'll see the level of abuse directed back to criticism of his treatment of people - is that not sniping then?
It does seem odd that folk don't seem to be able to tell the difference between selfless help on MSE and people who are posting as part of their "day job." most odd...0 -
I am a member of a few forums and I must admit, this forum is probably the most relaxed one about forum etiquette. On one forum I post on, if you do not search a question first before reposting, then your thread gets deleted by the mods.
On most of them, if you constantly start picking fights with other members then that gets the post deleted and continued abuse, will lead to a ban.
Yet, on here (MSE), the fact is that this does not happen. I do not feel this is a bad thing because most of the people on here will be restrained and adult enough to have debate without having to police the forum in such a way - which is nicer for all.
Now, like any written communication, the person posting should consider the way that their post will be received, however, if the person that the post is aimed at, is in the wrong mood or just completely misunderstands the tone of the post then offence is often taken.
We have requested that a sticky be put up for all new posters to view so they search for these kinds of posts to make them aware but these requests seem to have gone unanswered.
So I would politely request that as you have had your question answered, will you please let this post disappear into the back pages of the forum. Afterall, it has gone way beyond any benefit to anybody now.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Mortgage Adviser Code of Conduct. Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as financial advice.0
