Misselling of upgrades

I'm sure I can't be the first to have been (almost) caught out by this scam, but I haven't spotted another thread on the subject.

I recently finished a contract with Orange, and had been considering upgrading the phone. I received a call purporting to come from Orange, offering an upgrade. It seemed like a good deal, so I agreed. When the phone arrived it turned out to be from a 3rd pary company (variously named "Talking Phones" and "Fones Direct"). I wasn't too bothered about this until I spotted (fortunately) that the mobile number listed for the new phone was different to my existing number. It turns out that this company had tried to sell me a new separate contract, rather than an upgrade on the eisting contract. If I had gone ahead and activated the phone I'm sure I would have had great difficulty cancelling the new contract, snd could have found myself committed to a second montly bill!. As it is I have arranged to return the phone.

Orange were very helpful when I rang and spoke to someone. I was told that 3rd party companies have been banned from cold calling their customers, and they were keen to know the details so that they could potentially do something about it. I did point out that they shoud perhaps issue a general warning to their customers about this particular sharp practice.
