Thanks spinybif, the info about the MTU sorted our problem out (and I didn't even realise I had a problem!).
I'm using Ubuntu and whenever I tried downloading updates, the downloads would hang after about 20 seconds and I'd have to cancel and start again (sometimes 5 or 6 times, depending on how many updates there were). I've just downloaded 17 updates without problems and much quicker than before.
To eveyrone else, it might be worth changing your MTU and seeing if this solves the problem. As long as you make a note of what it was set at before you make the change, you can always change it back again.
The link to the page on the TalkTalk website is I'm having problems viewing certain websites e.g. Hotmail.
but from a quick scout whilst trying to find the page, different ISP's use different MTU's, so it might be worth contacting your ISP if it isn't TalkTalk to find out what setting they recommend.
Oh, and if you do change it, don't forget to reboot, I thought I had broken my web connection but the router needed rebooting for it to work properly!0 -
My DD's Fiance had a look this morning, he couldn't make head nor tail of the problem, he did find that MSE and Itpaystowatch use the same server and I'm having a problem with both. He then took my lappy to their flat which is in the same block as me and it worked fine, also it shows the home page with the Happy Birthday MSE heading from their flat but, my desktop that I'm using now doesn't have it
I can only access it from AOL on the desktop, not from IE on the desktop.
I've just found another site that won't open in IE - Valued Opinions0 -

Hi
I have had this problem for several weeks now & mentioned on here before.
I was told to ditch IE & use Firefox. I did that but it didn't help at all.
Back to square 1 again.
Sometimes I click on the diagnose connection problems link & it says restored conncetion but sometimes it says no problem with your connection.
My ISP is SKY & I use a Netgear router, not wireless though as I don't have their dongle.0 -
For those of you with AOL - I called them this evening finally after getting no joy accessing mse and they have a recorded message saying they are having some problems with certain web site accessing and are working on it - they reckon it will be sorted in 24 hours............now why didnt I ring them first0
