Car insurance going up instead of down?

Been looking to find cheaper car insurance with my son using the system Martin designed.

And we are shocked, they want more now than what he paid last year even though he had no accidents, well he got rear ended before Christmas, but it was not his fault.

The fact that he has driven for a full year and he also has a vehicle from work which he has driven claim free for nearly a year.

Anyone know of a company that charges less than £2500 per year for a 19 year old? Most quote £2500 - £5600  . Last year he paid £2800.

    Yes largely dependent on car.

Was the rear end shunt reported to your insurers? If yes then they will probably take this into account. They are not interested in who was to blame without a fight.

A positive point is that if your son drives a company vehicle, get a letter from his employer saying he has been driving for them for "x" months without a claim. In the past I got a broker to reduce a premium in similar circumstances to yours as it could be proved that the new driver had extra experience on top of "social" driving. Maybe this is a circumstance where a broker beats the internet comparison sites.

just guessing, he lives in bosnia and drives a rolls royce phantom, does over 25,000 miles per year and parks it on the road not outside his house?

    am i right?
if im wrong i would try reducing the mileage per year on his policy, and try admiral or elephant, when i was 19 elephant were the cheapest.

If his personal car is over a 1.2 and any combination of letters after it you have no hope,

if he has 0 no claims then you have no chance,

if you live in a inner city area you have no hope,

If you have no garage, no driveway, have a 'high' risk job then forget it (i was a waitress but still this was high risk as it was a licenced premesis)

If the car has a spoiler, alloys, pimped or 'done up' then again no chance

Ideally your son should be driving nothing more than a flintstones car or at a push a gocart until he is 25
  • Try A-plan insurance. Always the cheapest for me.
  • Thanks for your comments so far. Some made me laugh.

The car is a Seat about 1 1/2 years old. It has alloys but is not "pimped". Its a 1.4 Sport Ibiza. He does 6000 miles a year and parks it on the drive. He uses it only from Friday evenings to Sunday afternoons. We live in the outskirts of London and the postcode is not the best "LOL". But the area is still safe, at least to me it is. We left my car unlocked, one window down over a whole weekend on the drive and no one messed with it.

He is an Engineer and has a large van full of kit from work. He drives it all day 5 days a week driving from customer to customer and bases. Not too sure how many miles he does but it would be a lot more than in his private car.

Good tips about the rear end as the lady who drove into him is also insured with the same company son is. So we hope they would consider it. I think it is outrageous that as an innocent party pays the penalty. So this means we really have to hammer the insurance and also claim for future insurance costs? Would it help if we go in the future for protected no claims?

Gavioli: Thanks for the tip about employer. That we will try to do. Maybe it will help.

Yes, I've had cars like that as well :rotfl:. Sorry :).

I've had the same problem when living in London - moved from a "decent" postcode (N3) to a slightly worse one (N20) and the insurance went up as if I had moved to Bagdhad.

I don't think that this is taken into account at all - they look at the age and see a major risk.

Has that claim actually been resolved yet? A pending claim can do "interesting" things to your car insurance as a mate of mine found out. And if it has been resolved, was it a no-fault claim or did the insurance assign some blame to him?

I noticed someone recommended A-Plan up there ^^^^. I'd like to second that recommendation, they (well in my case, their "specialist vehicle" division) has provided me with very, very good service.
  • The claim is not yet resolved.

    Would that matter?

He stopped on a dual lane road as someone in front of him stopped because someone in front of them was turning into a side road. The lady driver was too close to him and rammed right into him. The repair was nearly 2 grand. They had to align chassey and other stuff I dont understand. We are claiming for whiplash and repair cost he had £500 to pay himself and we are claiming for the loss of value to the car as Seat would only give him £3K if he were to trade it in and value is around £6K I think. He also had no car for nearly 4 weeks and I ended up being the taxi driver again as he cannot drive our car as it is too powerful for him and only insured in my and my OH name.

So it seems we might have to claim also for future insurance costs? Would we be able to do that?

If he had no claims cover would that have helped?

Would it make it cheaper if I or hubby went on the car as well? It made no difference last year.
  • ive been in a similar situation to your son,im a forklift truck engineer, had a company van since the day i passed my test when i was 18,doing around 40,000 miles a year in the van alone and this doesnt count for anything with most insurers i tried it when i wanted to insure a vauxhall nova worth £400 when i was 19,they wanted £1200,absoloutly crazy.im now 25 still have a company van that is faster than my focus and handles worse, but again it counts for nothing with insurers.
