If a computer gives a black screen on power up, it is most definately a hardware failure. This could be anything from PSU, CPU, MOBO or memory.

That said, even if your Power Supply Unit or MOther BOard has failed, you could still get lights on the front of your machine.

However, its very difficult to determine a fault of this kind unless the machine is on the desk infront of you.

If you dont get any joy with Alberts advice (SSGA) then take the machine to a reputable engineer, (preferably not PC World).

They will be able to swap out parts to determine what has actually failed and perhapse give you a price on repairing the unit.

  • Hi fusty

The hard drive costs about £35. They do click on failure but all is not lost. A utility called spinrite can fix the drive structure. You will need to remove the drive and install to test on a PC using an adaptor cable (~£5).

The drive then can be heard to "spinup" and the contents read. Can you "borrow" a drive for the laptop?
As already stated some lights must come on, fans run etc, however have you swopped out the power supply? Any drinks spilled onto the machine?
