My daughter has a laptop and it won't start up. press the power button, keyboard lights up, makes a couple of 'clicking sounds' then stops.
Power button stays lit up, but nothing happens.
spoke to a techie bloke on phone from where she purchased it (4months out of warranty!!) he said it sounds like Motherboard, £220 all in repair.
Does anyone have any suggestions before i pay a fortune?
All advice greatfully received

Its abit harder to diagnose a laptop as you cant open it up and have a look for loose connections ect well you can if you know what your doing. And it could be a number of things, i.e overheated, mobo is goosed, faulty inbuilt graphics on mobo, faulty ram although their prob would have been several or constant beeps. were there any? Best course of action would be to look at ads for local cheap computing support i.e. students etc they probably wont charge that much and could probably give you a good idea of whats wrong.0

try holding power switch down for 10 secs, or remove the battery
is the click noise physical (hard disk), or electrical/coming from speaker?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
the double click is coming from what sounds like the hard drive.albertross wrote: »try holding power switch down for 10 secs, or remove the battery

it double clicks. whirs (is there such a term?) then stops. it then turns off, then on and thats it, it goes no further.

Don't overlook the obvious - are the hard drive and memory secure?
To check look on the bottom of the laptop and you will see some flaps which have been screwed down, unscrew them and lift them out, one by one. Make sure the hard drive is secure and the ram should be a snug fit. You should really ground yourself before touching the ram to minimise the risk of a static discharge.
Do you get the boot up screen at all?
Are there any beeps when the start button is pushed?0 -

hard drive & ram look secure
there is no boot up screen & no beeps when start button is pushed, also the light that usually flashes like mad on start up doesn't flash at all.:beer:0
