A few new features over the E55 which I have including double the quality in LP mode with the same recording time. Have to agree with the startup time of the E55, takes far too long, but most of my stuff comes from Sky+ these days so not that big a deal.

Thanks a lot for the tip about ebuyer and the ES10. Before I buy, could you help me with a query about the connection to my Mitsubishi tv? It's 6 yrs old and no problems but has only one scart socket - will it hook up with the ES10? I should mention I also have a Sagem freeview box and I'm currently running my video recorder from both but the ES10 will replace the vid. recorder. Also, from reading various posts since I joined the forum it seems that Scart cables come in different qualities. Am I right in thinking that the higher the price of the cable the better the quality? You can see how I'm not a techie! Still, as a grannie trying to keep pace I'm learning all the time. Many thanks for any help.

all depends on how you wish to use the setup but a basic setup would be Freeview box TV out > Scart lead > ES10 Scart in then ES10 Scart out > scart lead > Mitsubishi TV scart in.

This way you can usually get the best quality picture to record(as lots of freeview boxes only have RGB signal on TV scart socket not the VCR one), however limitations are that if you were recording from Freeview(or internal tuner) to DVDR, you can't watch any other Freeview channel

Other setup would be DVDR Scart in > scart lead > Freeview VCR scart, then Freeview TV scart > scart lead > Mitsubishi TV scart

This would then allow you to watch a Freeview channel if you were recording a programme of the DVDR's internal tuner(you still would have to watch TV internal tuner if recording from Freeview), only limitatioon of this setup is the signal you provide to DVDR isn't the best quality possible(still better than VCR mind)

Other option is to get an ES20 for example which is the ES10 but with an internal Freeview tuner, they should be out shortly, also a few others appearing on market with DVB tuner

I've got an integrated DVB Sony TV and wish to replace the old video with a DVD recorder. Ideally I want a DVDR with Freeview and a harddisc so I can watch a film on it if necessary whilst recording to the HD. Unfortunately, no-one has bothered to make one of these as yet.

Failing one coming out in the near future that I'll keep my Wharfdale DVD player and buy a freeview/DVD recorder.

Whats the difference with a Freeview tuner and a DVB tuner?

Search google for reviews on this, and you will see it gets excellent reviews all the time.

Well thanks to the recommendation on here we've just taken delivery of panasonic ES10 and I think I've got set up correctly (all by myself  )

But I still need to buy DVD-RAM discs later today before I know that its recording ok. Is the £13 for 5 from Argos a good buy?? (Am I right in thinking these are the discs we need for chasing playback??)

Also, I don't really get the differnce in the discs you can buy, so assuming I can record videos onto DVD now - what type of DVD's should these be? (ie wedding video where I won't want to add anything else on)

Hope this makes sense and sorry if I sound completely dim :o

    Thanks in advance x

have a look at the following site where you can get 10 DVD RAM discs for £14.99. Guess they'll make a charge fro delivery but they still look cheap.

For day to day stuff I've sworn by a couple of double-sided 9.4GB DVD-RAM carts, similar to video casettes in usefulness in that if you haven't had chance to watch what you've recorded you can quickly flip them over without hvaing to take too much care as they have a protective caddy, so little chance of scratching them like normal DVD-RAM(though I do have some of these as easier to use with PC dvd writer). Sadly bigpockets have non in stock currently but they are usually about £3.29 when they do have them for

edit: SVP have some similar in stock though http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/dvdram.html

Panasonic for £4.99 or Datasafe for £3.98(makes them very comparable in price to the £13 for 5 plus you get protective case)
