Either will do, most of the low cost ones are DVD+R whereas some of the higher price ones are as well :). I've a JVC which is a DVD-R, it can also use DVD-RAM which is handy as it works like the sky+ boxes where it pauses live tv and you can record and watch the DVD at the same time :)

    Thank you.

If you buy one that records in both the + and - format you have the best of both worlds and you won't have to worry about compatability.

You can get DVD Recorder's that do both formats now I think, but also consider buying one with a hard drive, it's a great feature no more messing about and looking for tapes.

This is one of the best recorders that money can buy just now

Search google for reviews on this, and you will see it gets excellent reviews all the time.

Ive got the model down from this, the E55 so cant really justify the upgrade to this one yet. Records to DVD-RAM (Argos £13 for 5) which can be recorded to, individual recordings deleted, whole disc recorded over 100,000 times, and easily transferred to PC if you have a DVD-RAM compatible drive. Can also record to standard DVD-R and you can get 25 of these for about £4-5. Depending on the bitrate you choose (basically recording quality) you can get upto 8hrs on a single disc but quality will be slightly worse than a VHS. With decent scart leads and a quality source such as sky, cable, freeview you can hardly tell the difference between the recording and the live broadcast. They also have a flexible recording mode, which if you had 45 mins left on a disc and the program was on for an hour, it would automagically lower the bitrate to fit the program onto the remaining space seamlessly ;) Does chasing playback where you can record and playback at the same time - either the same program or a different program previously recorded. Has progressive scan and RGB pass-thru.

Very few recorders have RGB scart input, which if you know what this is, you know you will need it, but if you dont, to put it simply its is a LOT better picture quality.

If you can stretch to one with a hard drive, then go for it, and again I would personally go for a panasonic model. You can edit out the ads and crap and then burn to DVD

Once you have recorded on a DVD can you play it any player or just on the one you have burnt it on?

I have a Panasonic DMR-E85H and when I burn to DVD I can only play it on that DVD player.

you have to "Finalise" it before you can play it on another player - the other player also must be caperble of playing such disc - not all can as some only play pre-recorded. Also -R is only compatible with other player, but as yours is a Panni it must be -R

    Another good deal is http://www.johnlewis.com/Shopping/Product.aspx?ARA=Audio+%26+TV&CAT=DVD+%26+Video&SCT=DVD+%26+Video&PRT=DVD+Recorders&Type=SKU&Id=230205848

I've had one for 2 months and it's good - I must admit the ebuyer deal is probably better though.

I'll give it another go and see if I get an option to finalise the DVD.

Yes, so far its played in all players Ive tried, plus Ive given recordings to other people from work and stuff, and they have watched them no problems. Defo sounds like the disc hasnt been finalised, its an option in the menu.

I was about to buy the E55. I'm not a techie at all so can I assume that the ES10 is a newer model and if I'm buying panasonic is this the one to go for?

The ES10 is the replacement for the E55 yes. Think the fetaure set is fairly similar with the added + playback and -RW record and a faster startup time(my one bugbear of the E55)
