Yes, Very well said!
I was a tad annoyed when I spent some considerable time answering a query, giving fairly detailed advice, only to be told "a mate who is a handyman has told me a better cheaper way of doing it."
Gee, I'm so glad I did a 4 year apprenticeship, ran a team of 22 blokes and been in the trade for 25 years, now run my own business, to be to be told that. Thanks.
We dont have to offer our help...

Hi Woody
Thanks for taking the time to post, you're exactly the type of person this forum needs and it is disappointing someone appears to have taken your advice for granted. As we all know, cheapest is not always best. I think we are all looking for value for money when it comes to entrusting someone to work on your home.
In your experience, do you know what is the going rate for a day's work for a chippy (given regional variations, we're in West Sussex), it's just that we are in the process of purchasing a new sink and tap and getting quotes for a new kitchen worktop and breakfast bar to be fitted?Mortgage start date: 21 July 2006

sorry, my last post sounded a tad harsh. I had just got the PM, and was a bit peed at the tone.
Canucklehead makes some very good valid points for all of us!

Good evening: Just in case....my comments were directed at original posters in general, not anyone specifically;)
Thanks.

Canuckle, coming from southampton until 4 years ago I knowe your area well, in fact I was down in sussex last summer, took my girlfriend to Chichester Arundle and Shorham for day.
Bit hard to answer about rates, as some of W Sussex is very expensive and I'm a bit out of touch. I would hazzard a guess that you'll be looking around £150 - £180 per day mark. Many people charge per cut for worktops, so for each Mitre (corner) I guess about £50, The same for the sink cutout. Some chippies (myself included) will put an additional charge on to cover the cost of the router cutter for the mitre which is about £18 if I'm only doing 1 cut.
It's very hard to really know costs down there, but if I was fitting a U shaped kitchen, so two mitres, the sink cutout, and the breakfast bar, I would probably have a mate with me if they are 40mm worktops so Probably about £200. BUT that is purely a guess as I obviously havent seen the job. Possibly £250 -£300 ish around your way? But it really does depend on an awful lot of things.
Dont forget to get worktop bolts (about £1 each, 3 for each joint) to connect the joints, and also I always recommend (hang darn it name has gone clean out of my mind now!) Colourfill (?) to go in the joint with. it is a colour matched sealent desgined for the worktops that helps make the joint water resistant. It's about £7 a tube.
Hope this is of some help anyway LOL

Boilers cost about £1,000 (see here).
BG are rip-off merchants and should be investigated. Many CORGI plumbers are also rip-off merchantys so be careful to select one that you trust or has been recommended by a friend.
Allow a generous two days for the work and even if they need to 2 people (one that you have confirmed is CORGI registered and his monkey). Let's call it £150 for the CORGI and £50 for his mate, that's £400. Quotes around £1,500 would seem reasonable. £2k and, although you'll have been shafted, it is money that BG haven't had to add to their hideous profits.

Anybody know where I can get a toner cartridge for my keyboard?
Here's an example of how to put the experts off. From the Utilities forum 28-2-08.
Not sure if I would like my son or daughter referred to as a monkey just because he/she was doing an apprenticeship.
After a while you get to know the ones who have had an unfortunate experience and ignore their bitter and twisted opinions.

Yes, seen his postings before in the mortage section. My employee is untrained in so much as he didn't do an apprenticeship. But he is self taught and knocks spots of many others who are fully trained! Don't think he'd like being called a monkey either.
