Is this forum really working because...

Options
...there are a lot of people posting and it is clear the posts are being viewed by a lot of people but the number of replies is poor, in other words, it doesn't appear there are enough 'experts' around.

Has anyone got any ideas how this forum could be improved because we do spend a lot of money on the sort of quotes that are being posted here?

  • "some experts" are better than nothing.

one can only reply on topics relevent to "their skills"

if people don't ask WE can't answer.

i've found other tips/advise on just reading a post , and i would imagine people who are not keen on posting will do the same.
  • There are more relevant sites for questions on here. This site is good for general advise

Well, for what its worth, I am an expert in my profession :D .

I also value other peoples opinions on here, in my mind, these are the best people to get advice from, people who have had similar experiences, or similar work done in thier homes.

We all say, speak to friends, family neighbours etc to get reliable help, or informtion, so there is none better than the ones who have had it, and the majority, are on here giving advice.:D

    Ditto,

Plus, I have to admit, I've never used this forum just for 'expert' advice, although it's useful it's not always necessary. It's nice to hear other ideas and opinions too. Not all subjects require an expert.

As a Tradesman, I only have limited time on here to answer questions, especially since I also belong to another couple of more specific forums, but looking around, it seems to work fine.
One good thing about not being too many Pro's on here is that you do not get too much conflicting advice. Sometimes there is more then one way to carry out a job (example of someone on here asking how to cut hole for sink in a worktop, told 3 different ways on another forum which can seem confusing.) and the original poster can get quite confused as we all like to think *our way* is the best.

I'll keep on offereing help and I guess other trades will as well, as long as we are wanted on here.

  • Good evening: My OH and I enjoy contributing to this forum but I must admit it is frustrating to see good advice being given but not acknowledged or thanked by the OP...one click on the 'Thanks' button says so much and costs nothing, the ultimate in moneysaving! Also...an update when you've sorted the problem is also appreciated as your solution could be the answer to someone else's question;).

    Yes, Very well said!

I was a tad annoyed when I spent some considerable time answering a query, giving fairly detailed advice, only to be told "a mate who is a handyman has told me a better cheaper way of doing it."
Gee, I'm so glad I did a 4 year apprenticeship, ran a team of 22 blokes and been in the trade for 25 years, now run my own business, to be to be told that. Thanks.

We dont have to offer our help...

Good points well made. I will be more aware of giving thanks when appropriate.
