Ideas on how to fix poorly Dyson?

The thick cable for our Dyson attachments has kind of stretched and torn. It's unusable and it's not one of the spare parts they do on the site. It seemed expensive for a dyson engineer to come out but don't want to fork out on a new one.

Speed is of the essense really as we have 3 cats and need the attachment to vac the furniture. It's a daily task and it broke yesterday.

Does anyone have any suggestions? The upright bit works fine.

My thoughts are along the lines of either:

a) fix it if anyone knows how
b) get a little hand held one for the furniture if anyone can suggest one that's good at picking up pet hair.

Many thanks for reading this. If I tell you that, since Christmas the following things have broken in our household: 2 pairs of glasses, the car, washing machine, microwave, toaster, stereo, video, camera, the chimney, the stair carpet got threadbare, the computer, the phone, the tv cabinet, my mobile and last week I lost my husband's mobile, you can see why I'm keen not to buy a new one.

Thank goodness for this site. I've managed to repair, replace on good deals and do without various of these things. I think before I had my moneysaver head on I'd have had it (my head) firmly in the sand.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
