British Gas - £570m Profits Reported

I seriously would like to know how British Gas can defend this, and I am really looking forwards to the P&L of all the other energy providers.

British Gas are nothing more than a bunch of thieving, disgusting parasites, bleeding every penny out of an industry where people have to buy the product or end up dead! :(

I am sure that Roger Carr will enjoy his bonus this year while the more vulnerable of his clients face having either their supply disconnected or token meters putting in to their homes.

This is what is wrong with Britain today, people pleading poverty on one hand and taking what they can for nothing with the other – it runs all the way down from the top of business, all the way to our “Well”-fare state. I guess we reap what we sow, we elected our governing parties and years later – this is what we get……. :wall: :wall:

A windfall tax wont do !!!!!! all for the man in the street, but giving price control to the regulator and we may all get some value.

  • Profit up from £95m in 2006 to £570m in 2007, and they're going ahead with the 15% price hike announced last month.
  • I just read it too, 40% up in 2007! I am so angry (although BG is not my supplier), but I think that probably all the other companies do the same thing. What can we do? Nothing! This is a very serious problem, since gas is an essential good and we cannot as consumers turn our back to those companies to teach them a lesson. Can we write a letter of complaint or something to someone?

It's pure greed & daylight robbery rolled into one and we can't seem to do anything about it? Yes we can switch, and I hope people do but I doubt it will have any effect in the long run.

In this instance I feel British gas will of amassed such a large pot of money over the coming year that they will, hey presto, reduce their prices a bit to give the impression that they do care but in fact it will be small pennies by comparison to their profits and little benefit to the consumer!

It's all a game that has the odds well and truly stacked up against the paying public! A disgrace!

Feel a bit better now I've got that off my chest......

And another thing, British Gas isnt even British!
  • To be honest I find the whole thing just one big yawn!... I have written numerous postings over the years about British Gas from their scandalous exploitation of pensioners over Boiler maintenance, telling people they need new Boilers when they don't. Useless customer service, exploiting people without bank accounts, employing people to con people into changing to them by giving misleading information ..plus of course charging too much for their products and making it difficult to leave.

I have already written in a previous posting that I would not use them if they were giving their product away..

At the end of the day there is a choice and by using British Gas you are contributing to their outrageous profits..

If everyone cancelled and moved away from them things would be different...but of course they won't and we will get all these bleating newspaper headlines as per usual!

Yes your MP that what they are there for! Enough people make their anger felt at these rises and the total ineptitude of Ofgem to regulate them properly they might actually do something instead of working on their expense accounts !

The profit figure isn't actually that big when you consider how large a company is, and the number of customers it serves - other energy companies are actually even more obscene and less generous to vulnerable customers.

But wait - "profit! burn them! burn them all!!".

Its obscene, heating, lighting is a essential parts of life, including food and shelter. Unfortunately many thousands of people across the country are now having to make choices to eat or keep warm. If companies like that are making this amount of money on top of 15% price hikes, then something isnt right.

The regulatory bodies are not doping there job properly. What ever happen to have that big fat pipe working which would which was suppose to stop these large hikes last year but whats happened its prices have gone through the roof yet again.

You're right to highlight the scandalous way British Gas take advantage of many of their customers, especially OAPs.
Yes, ideally they need to switch but the trouble is many people, not just OAPs either, are very nervous when it comes to such matters and don't want the worry and uncertainty of switching suppliers especially if they don't use the internet, so why should they be penalised? They should be treated as fairly as the next person!

Therefore I feel the ombudsman/government need to provide much more protection from the likes of British Gas to ensure they do more to protect the consumer.

(I signed the mentioned petition also)
