Petition to regulate energy price rises
Hi All,
It's taken a while but I've just had my petition to regulate energy price rises approved on the Prime Minister's petitions website. It would be really appreciated if you would take a minute to sign it and maybe someone in the government might actually listen.
Please forward the link to your friends and family.
Martin, I hope you don't mind me posting this. I strongly believe the energy companies are exploiting the market and taking us for a ride.

They might listen but the petition web site unfortunately is just an exercise in appeasing voters to air there grievances they will do nothing to act, I wish this was not the case0

I think its a good way of showing our frustration at this and hopefully if enough people sign this they may well start to take note of it.Look after the pennies and the pounds will spend themselves0

Energy prices are Regulated!
Price rises and profits are regulated.
Read about ofgem(the Regulator) on this link.

As Cardew says, they are regulated. Ofgem are notified before any potential price increase as the have to consider the impact to the vulnerable, fuel poor type social groups.
These petitions never seem to achieve anything so does anyone really listen? Or does some admin clerk somewhere just send you back a standard response agreeing to nothing but agreeing the issues, is "an issue":rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
Maybe I'm reading it wrong but it doesn't say anything about prices being regulated. It states that the 'monopoly companies which run the gas and electricity networks' are regulated. To my knowledge this means National Grid Transco and the like not NPower, Scottish Power etc. The very first line is where Ofgem fails. They don't promote competition in any manner. There are 6 major suppliers and all of them charge similar amounts. If one raises prices, they all follow suit quickly. If one reduces prices, the others eventually follow suit.
While I agree that a petition probably won't in itself change anything it is a valid way of getting the message to the government that we want some action on prices. The papers have recently picked up on it too and it's another method to get our displeasure across. Signing the petition can't be a bad thing. I've even had a couple of my local councillors sign.
Obviously it's your choice whether you sign up or not but it not signing won't make them do anything at all. At least this way there may be a small chance.
Protecting consumers is Ofgem’s first priority. We do this by:- promoting competition, wherever appropriate, and
- regulating the monopoly companies which run the gas and electricity networks.
Other priorities and influences include:- helping to secure Britain’s energy supplies by promoting competitive gas and electricity markets - and regulating them so that there is adequate investment in the networks, and
- contributing to the drive to curb climate change and other work aimed at sustainable development by, for example:
- helping gas and electricity industries to achieve environmental improvements as efficiently as possible; and
- taking account of the needs of vulnerable customers, particularly older people, those with disabilities and those on low incomes.

Ofgem has a social responsibility. They have to help to reduce fuel poverty and this means monitoring fair pricing so Suppliers don't shift the fuel poverty line.
From the Governments White Paper on Ofgem's responsibility in the gas & elec markets:2.1 The Utilities Act 2000 places duties on the Authority to promote the efficient useOfgem’s primary duty to protect.
of gas and electricity, and to have regard to the effect of licensed activities on the
environment. The Government believes that, through lower bills for consumers and a
better environment, this is very much in the interest of consumers whose interest it is
Thats per the Secretary Of State in regard to Ofgem's authority over the market.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
You ever noticed that all the petrol stations put up prices by around the same amount.......
Must be collusion. Lets get them regulated too.0 -
Maybe I'm reading it wrong but it doesn't say anything about prices being regulated.
The principal regulatory power of ofgem is to ensure that utility companies comply with the provisions of the Gas and Electricity Acts which controls and limits the charges and revenue of the utility companies.
You really need to read those acts and study all the paperwork.
The main reason why gas and electricity prices are so high is that the gas and oil prices on the world market are high.
There are secondary reasons like the UK coal industry was decimated by Maggie Thatcher for political reasons. The all powerful unions brought down the Heath Government and Maggie was determined to destroy the power of the Unions - and at the time North sea gas was the cheapest fuel anyway, and of course it was going to last forever!!!!! -Not.
The people who can bring down our gas and electricity prices 'at a stroke' are OPEC and President Putin of Russia - and I fear a petition to them will have exactly the same effect as yours!0 -
You can't legislate the profit out of an investment, otherwise the investors stop investing. And the numerous cashback sites prove that there is competition in the energy industry.
What is needed is to regulate the regulator, make OFGEM look at the complicated tariff structure for example.
Make it easier to see who is cheapest.0
