i have just signed the petition too. british gas are really exploiting their customers. just had a massive bill from them acouple of weeks ago, it was estimated .i gave them a call to enquire as i knew landlord had given them metre reading when we first moved in. the guy i spoke to was not at all helpful, he said LL had given wrong reading and he actually said my bill was to be increased as they had under charged. he was now using the "wrong reading" to put the bill up even higher. he also said estimates were made according to the last bill,-meaning we were getting charged according to what the previous tenants consumed. i was so furious and rang the landlord who also had a word with british gas.
theyve now said they will freeze the account and will issue another bill in twelve weeks time. this means though i can not swicht providers for now . had sighned up to n power before the bill came and now i will be stuck with british gas for another three months. i just hope they wont be using their new charges for what i consumed before the price rise.

Well done sav-c for getting off your backside and actually doing something! I will certainly sign your petition, and for those of you who just whinge at other people who try and do something to make the world a better place for the rest of us, can I refer you to the No 10 Petition on road charging use some time ago which received over a million signatures and seems to have persuaded the government that trying to charge for road use was an idea to be quietly dropped. Individuals totally under estimate their power to change things. Collectively consumers have enormous power to exert pressure on those who provide services to us if only we would all get together, get off our backsides and DO something collectively instead of just whinging about it. A national one day boycott of British Gas might start the ball rolling. If for example everybody decided to switch off their central heating and gas cookers, wear their overcoats and scarves indoors and suffer a tiny amount of hardship for a few hours on a certain day to make a point, the message might start to get across. After all, millions of people lived under these conditions in the last war and survived. Perhaps we've all gone a little soft ??

Ive signed the petition. Im hoping something will be done about it. Politically incorrect I'm sure but I'm think in the back of my mind they are using the price of wholesale gas as an excuse. Especially with the gross profit BG has made - Oh, hold on I think they have an answer for that to somewhere....

Ofgem, no doubt, are charged with keeping the energy infrastructure alive and at £40 a year profit per customer, the suppliers have the upper hand.
With all the hassle and expense of billing and data collection can't see BG and the like wanting the business.
    Better to sell Christmas trees.
  • another way to get your point across is to contact your mp on the fax your mp service. ask them what THEY are going to do about it, after all your bills could go down 17% if they took off the VAT, BUT thanks to tony blair, he gave away our right to do that, so europe won`t allow it now (they need to keep there european companies happy). after all some mp`s are having a laugh by bringing up the "cinema sweet con" in parliment, yet something important like this they don`t want to know, with sweets don`t like the cost don`t buy, with electric/gas don`t like the cost... tough you need it so you have to pay it.

Now were facing a 40% rise in energy costs later this year. I cant help thinking there is something defiantly wrong here and I dont think it is purely down to the price of wholesale gas. I think in most cases that will take the average gas bill to way over 100.00/month.

I remember a few years ago I had kittens and assumed it was a computer error when BG wanted to raise my Monthly DD from 40/month to 100/month.

On a more skeptical note, has the price of gas risen that much or are the shareholders demanding more profits? The regulators seemed to be taking a very lied back attitude, I wouldn't be saying that unless I hadn't seen the year on year profits these companies are making. Unfortunately the prices are rising with no sign in the future of the price every coming down.
Every time there is criticism over the price rise we always hear the same excuse, "The price of wholesale gas has increased" and the government and the regulators are accepting these reasons.

Who's running Britain as it isn't the regulators nor the Government. With every price rise, the energy providers profits rise. Perhaps some sort of profit capping should be put in place as the providers nor share holders aren't feeling the pinch of the energy crisis!

Personally I would like to see the enery industry come back to public ownership so that no profit is made from it, but I know that'll never happen now.

No, they would go down 5%. Domestic fuel is taxed at 5% VAT.
