Aldi fruit trees

Fruit Trees in Aldi now. (Warrington)

£3.99 each and much better than Woolies £4.99 ones. 5ft tall.

Types availiable, cherry x 2, pear x 2, apple x 4, plum x 2, peach, apricot.

Only surposed to be in store tommorrow. Warrington has one small pallet only with about 25 trees left. :j

Brilliant tip! got a cherry tree today £3.99 as you said, real bargain. Have just heeled it in until I think of a suitable position to plant it.

Does anybody know what sort of root stocks the trees are on?

I only have a very small space so chose a self-fertile cherry tree on gisela 5 root stock as it needs to be small.

I wonder what the Aldi ones are like.

The Lidl trees do not state rootstock, no Aldi near me so can't answer your specific query

Aldi trees - Gotta be careful to buy the other varity on offer if buying apple or pear trees so a conference as well as a comice pear for example - read the label.

Says on each tree that they should not be planted in frost, so i think the root stock is the same for each tree. Fantastic bargain.

Can a cherry tree be planted in a large pot and fruit successfully?
Don't fancy having a 20ft tree in smallish my garden.

(from the aldi) At 3.4 meters high (14ft) - its now giving far too much fruit to eat or store Kilos and kilos. It is very large now.

I distinctly remember when it was 3 years or so old how little fruit it gave even though it was taller than me at 7-8ft and widening out with its branches. Most of the plants energy was still being driven into its root system, before it could afford the luxury of bearing fruit. This is where the importantace of the root stock comes in.

I have read that the key to growing in a pot is the root stock. Rootstocks make the same grafted tree grow from dwarf size to 25ft and larger. The aldi do not list the rootstock, but its is unlikely that you would be able to get a typically large rootstock tree like a cherry tree to the stage where it bears a reasonable amount of fruit by keeping it in a pot IMO. You would need to go for the dwarf rootstock for a pot.

How can I buy now if not allowed to be planted in frost?
Do not have a greenhouse (yet) and live in NE of Scotland!

I think they mean not into frozen ground, so if you have forecast of just normal Sottish horizontal rain for the week or so ahead, plant it out

Afraid we have seen DH SNOWED off the cricket pitch in May in the past!

It will be a long time until I feel I can guarantee against frost in the garden
