Orange - Cancelled Contract

I have after a long few moths of problems with Orange Broadband, managed to convince them to cancel my broadband and mobile contract without any cost to myself. But...
they want me to send the handset back.. it is over 12 months old.. does the handset not become mine after the initial contract period??

How long was your contract, i.e. 12 months / 18 months etc? If it was 12, then the handset is yours to keep.

part of the story...
it was initially a 12 month, then i went for the free broadband deal they were offering which meant signing up to an 18 month contract. The broad band stopped working , had a horrrendous few months of customer service and decided to cut all ties with Orange. They have accepted the bad service and agreed to me getting out for free as a about 5 months left of the 18.
So i suppose they are saying as 18 months still not up the phone is theirs??
