Thermostat Question

Siting room thermostats can be problematic. Our main living room has an oft used open fire so we can't put a thermostat there. It would obviously not be sensible to put it in the kitchen. We don't have a hallway and don't heat rooms we are not using. We do have TRV's on all our rads and just shut the boiler off manually if its too warm. I think under the latest regulations I would be required to install a thermostat but I can't imagine where I would be supposed to put it.
  • This works:
Turn the water temperature down on the boiler (normally has min an max dial turn to 1/3 from min).

Because you will probably have 2 radiators in the lounge it warms up quicker than upstairs where there is only one per room. Making the room warm up slower, the heat has a chance to equalise upstairs and downstairs. It also allows the TRV's work longer.

You will probably find you need the heating on slightly longer but it also means that the radiators don't get "burn hot" when your kid starts to crawl.

Also as pointed out above try turning one radiator down (they all do) downstairs.
Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:

If you have trv's in the room with the stat, turn the stat up high (eg 24 degrees), and let the trv's do their job (maintaining the desired temperature in each room). If you have them all on full, you might as well not have them, they need to be adjusted to "your" comfortable temperature (e.g. 3-4), and no higher.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

All the new builds I looked at had no TRV down stairs

I balanced mine just fine but it took some adjustments.
