To be honest your not ment to jump start new cars like we all used to the old cars you can fry the ECU very easy in newer cars by jump starting with a car.0

so what do you suggest then?
i have heard of people talking about this but i have never actually spoken to someone who has done it or even knows someone who has done it.
some manufacturers have a specific way of connecting the jump leads, like positive first or negative first,i usually put the positive on then the negative with ignition off, then try it.
i think if you were going to fry the ecu the most likely chance of this is by having the ignition on when putting the jump leads on causing a surge.
OP,try jump starting,if it start then great if problem persists, get someone to turn key and you get a block of wood and hit the starter motor with it....work permit granted!0 -
Booster packs that are designed for jumping new vehicles without the danger of any damage.0

I agree, whilst the never ending complexity of the modern cars electrical system continues, the basic fundamentals prevail. Its just if you !!!! up, you !!!! up bigger and theoretically can fry an ecu. I too have never known it happen. Of course if you put a dead short across either battery connected to the car, then yes you have trouble. No car is idiot factor proofI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Firstly, jump starting will not fry the ECU.
Secondly, unless you know what you are doing do not touch the wires and certainly dont try shorting them with anything. The starter has the highest amp draw of any component in the car and if you make a mistake and come in contact with that current, you will weld your jewellry to yourself !!
Simple test. Put the lights on headlights and crank the key. If the lights dim to almost off when cranking then jup start the car and/or charge the battery. If not, then look at the starter motor and do the rocking test above. After that, call the RAC/AA or call a mechanic0 -

unless you want to spend as much as a new ecu would cost you then forget it because the cheap ones are crap, they wont give you a second chance, especially not with a diesel....work permit granted!0 -
I know booster packs aint great but they aint that bad either and I agree the chances of doing any damage to your ECU are very low, thing is that chance is there and to just tell people to jump start their car witout warning it may do damage is a bit careless.
To be honest I would just jump start using another car and put the leads on when the ignition is off like someone already said, if I did not have the option of using a booster pack, but I would not tell someone else to do it without explaining that there is a danger of doing damage.
Manufacturers have let this be knowen its a problem for ages and yet people never seem to care until something goes wrong.0 -

My jewellry is well and truly welded to myself, and long may it stay that way untill my lights dim at least,;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
