I can recommend the Travelodge London City Road. It is a very new Travelodge, therefore clean and well-maintained. It is close to Old Street and Moorgate stations, and the city is within easy travel distance. One of our building managers stays there on a regular basis and has never complained although he is generally not a fan of Travelodge and asked me never to book him into any other Travelodge.
    Reclaimed thanks to this site:

  • Kings Cross Royal Scots- Have never been to London -haven't got a clue about the area etc but just typed in London in the "find hotel" bar!

Ive stayed in this one, its great. Right near Kings Cross and St Pancras. You can walk it. Its on the way to Pentonville Road and Pentonville prison. Area was fine actually - few pubs and clubs, take aways and excellent for transport / tubes. Would recommend.

My dates are showing in green but are coming up at £60 no matter what I do !!

The system did this to me for the Cirencester Travelodge during the last sale in January, showing £19 available but coming up full price when I tried to book, over and over again over several days.

I emailed them in the end and had a reply just last week saying they were going to get the IT department to look into the problem.

Didn't think it was possible to phone them to book the advertised £19 rate as the Saver Rate rules say 'only available on line'

  • Hope you enjoy your London stay, however if you buy an Oyster card it will cost £3 each as this is the fee for admin if it is lost etc, if you hand the card back you do get the fee back I believe but no idea if the refund is instant, knowing TFL you probably have to apply for the rebate in triplicate.
Generally with an oyster card, fares are considerably cheaper than you would pay for paper tickets but as said here already, fares in London after 9.30am and at weekends are heaps cheaper than before.
The card works on a pay as you go principle so all you need to do is ensure that you have enough money on the card and you MUST touch in and touch out each time you begin and end your journey and usually between train lines.

    Thankyou!
I have already ordered 4 individual oyster cards to use via a freebie link posted a while ago!:D A bit confused about the zones though! but I'm sure it will all make sense when we get there!
I have read some mixed reviews on here regarding our accommodation but in all honesty as long as we have clean bedding and towels and the rooms are secure not too fussed- Accommodation was so expensive we were even looking at hostels- OH wasn't keen about a bunk bed though!:rotfl:- He's built like a Walnut Whip!
All in all it could be quite a MSE trip- Have just ordered deal vouchers from Tesco for the tour bus thingy, Cheap train tickets from the Pigsback promotion, Oyster cards , a Bite discount card and the Travelodge offer its going very well- I'm off to look at top table for eating out in the area too!-
All this stemmed from Wrestling tickets for my son's Christmas present so has been in the planning since October.

Any more suggestions would be gratefully received though. Especially what my daughter and I could do in the 02 building whilst the boys are indulging in their wrestling.
Thought about doing Tutankamun but we ALL want to do this as a family.
Sadly the Afrika show would have been ideal but it finishes before we get there....sigh....
I seem to have hi-jacked this thread :o apologies OP :o

  • Just to add my story about the Kings Cross Royal Scot. I stayed there in November with my 16 yr old daughter and friend as her birthday treat weekend, and it was the worst experience I have had with a hotel! The room was awful, the window wouldnt shut so there was a 5 inch gap with the wind blowing through it all night. The rooms next door and across the corridor were occupied by about 10 lads on a night out, shouting, yelling, throwing up in the corridor, throwing food around the corridor, dragging each other up and down the floor, loud music etc. I wanted to phone down to complain to the manager but there was no phone in the room. Had to go down myself in the end, past all the rioting in the corridor to get the manager to come and tell them to shut up, which they did for about 5 minutes then they started again. By 4 am I had had enough and went down again to complain, was left sitting in the lobby for 45 minutes while the manager tried to sort it out, while many people came and went, then was told there were no other rooms available that we could stay in, other than all split up into seperate rooms, as if I would let my 16 yr old daughter stay in a room on her own! The manager then came up to my room to see if he could shut the window, which he couldnt as the frame was twisted so the wondow wouldnt slide fully, while he was trying to attempt it, the door to our oom was opened and a drunken man burst it, muttering something! So all in all we had zero sleep, with the wind howling through the gap in the window, listening to the noise from next door and the road outside which seems to be on a main ambulance route as one went by every 2minutes. We had to wait until 2 pm the next day to get a new room, on our return from shopping we found a police van and 2 police cars parked outside the hotel, and were told that 20 people had locked themselves into a room and were having a party and refusing to come out! The police had to go in and break it up! What a nightmare indeed!
So if you can change hotels, I would certainly recommend it!

Obviously, I appreciate how inexpensive the reduced rooms can be for a travelling family etc., but I simply cannot trust Travelodge, how can anyone tell the state of one of their lodges from a hotel description?

Can I suggest that anyone who has stayed at a bad one post it here to let people judge for themselves? Not only Travelodge, any other well known chains should also be named and shamed.

    !
Try the "tripadvisor" website which has user reviews.

I use many different Travelodges over the year, standards vary but by and large they do the job - one to stay well clear of is Birmingham Oldbury; which is very old, poorly maintained and has staff that just could not care less. Use Birmingham Maypole instead. If you are a light sleeper it is worth avoiding rooms at any T/L which are beside/behind or above the entrance due to late night banging doors etc.

The biggest quibles I have are that the revamped website does not give an "all" option when searching for a bargain room, and that all the rates are now shown in the same colour (orange).

We want to stay around Ross on Wye to do some research into genealogy. I tried to book one of the Malmaison deals (discount based on my age, so it would have made it quite a lot cheaper!) but the only two were Birmingham or Oxford, neither of which were handy at all, so we cancelled that booking (Malmaison were great, no complaints there). I have now booked this Travelodge deal (£29 when we want to go, not £19) at Monmouth as that seems to be the nearest to where we need to go.

The thing is, can anyone tell me if this hotel is alright? I know it's on the A40 so there might be traffic noise but we will be going in a car only bought last week so I hope the car park is OK. We are staying two nights and it's non-refundable etc so I do hope I have done the right thing. Any advice about where to eat for dinner/breakfast or anything else would be appreciated.
  • Anybody live near Hayle in Cornwall and can recommend some places to visit? I 'hayle' from Cornwall myself, but not that far down!

I live in Penzance and there are plenty of fantastic places to visit near Hayle. Hayle itself has great beaches (Gwithian, the towans) and St Ives is not far away (drive to St Erth station and go on the beautiful train ride to St Ives, saves hassle with parking). St Michaels Mount and Marazion is 15 mins drive, kids love this beach and the playground and there is a cycle path to Penzance from there. Oh and Trevaskis Farm in Connor Downs has great food and cakes.

Penzance itself is not too bad, nice promenade, beautiful parks/gardens (Penlee and Morrab) and good playgrounds again (I seem to be assuming you have children, apologies if not, I know all local playgrounds v well having 2 of my own!!).

A bit further past Penzance there are many lovely beaches like Porthcurno and Sennen. There are also plentiful gardens around to visit which are brimming with magnolias, rhododendrons and camelias now and for the next month, Trevarno, Trebah, Tredarvah and Trewidden (Tre- is sooo Cornish!!) to name but a few. Bear in mind though if you are coming in Easter hols it WILL be busy everywhere especially where parking is concerned.

The Cornishman and the West Briton often have special offers in for Easter so worth the 80p odd to check.

Hope you have a good holiday :D

Thanks to all who post comps :D
