I bought a mobile phone for my son in September last year fom Littlewoods catalogue and its stopped working. It wasn't cheap and I don't really want to write it off, can I send it back? I don't really deal much with catalogues so don't know the policies regarding time scales etc. and would appreciate some advice. TIA.

It will have at least a 12 month warranty. What make is it? if Nokia it may be easier to use a Nokia Service Centre.Cheers

No its not a Nokia, its a Samsung U600i. I thought it should have a guarantee but was unsure whether it would be a manufacturers one or whether I could return it to where I purchased it. I was hoping for the latter so I could just send it back and get a replacement.0

Is it on a network or was it sim free phone? If it's a network locked one, the warranty is normally with the network itself so you would just have to ring up or go into your local store. You might need proof of purchase like a catalogue statement or receipt of the phone.
If it's sim free one, that you would have to take it to a Samsung repair centre.
Saying that even if it's a network locked one, you could still get it fixed at the Samsung repair centre. Depends on what is more convenient for you.

My advice would be to just ring Littlewoods in the first instance - they may just replace it, as it's only a few months old. I'd push for them to deal with it for you, but if they won't replace it they should at the very least advise you on how to proceed with Samsung.0

Its a T Mobile phone and have always found them to be the most unhelpful and obstructive as they possibly can be when you go in to the shop with a problem, might just be my local branch, but theres always an argument and was hoping to avoid this! Thanks for the info and the link, will check it out.
Am I the only person in the world who thinks mobiles are more trouble than they're worth?0 -
Anything can go faulty.
It is how you are looked after when a fault occurs that counts.
The retailer is entitled to inspect the item before action is taken.
As you purchased from a catalogue they should be your first point of contact.0 -
Your phone should be fit for purpose and your contract is with where you bought it from; the onus is on them to get it fixed for you *if* it has developed a fault without neglect/misuse (as an aside, I know phone manufacturers are putting moisture indicator stickers inside phones so they can quickly tell if it's down to liquid ingress).
Whilst going straight to Samsung will probably work and be quicker in terms of getting the thing fixed, you are then accepting the phone and - as far as I know - forgoing the right to take it up with the original retailer. If you want to push for a replacement and/or money back, you need to deal with Littlewoods.
Incidentally, whilst a warranty covers you for a set period of time, anything you buy must be fit for purpose and last a reasonable period of time, so if your TV breaks down 1 year and 1 day after being bought with a 1 year warranty, it is possible to fight this on the basis that people don't expect to replace TVs annually. With a mobile, subject to frequent handling and harsh environments, I suspect a year is probably a reasonable time for it to last. The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster!

Thanks for all your replies. I phoned Littlewoods this morning and they're going to pick it up tomorrow (providing the drivers got some returns labels) and investigate. If they believe it to be faulty they will refund the money into my account, like they did with you yorksbabe, so we shall have to wait and see. Thanks again.0
