Whether you were sorting your late husband's estate or distributing money you inherited may hinge on whether his bankruptcy had been discharged before his death.
As a discharged bankrupt his debts will have been written off and the matter closed. If he hadn't yet been discharged, the official receiver should have taken control of the money in his estate and use it to pay creditors.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I don't know if the rules have changed, but, slightly different situation, 20 years ago I was on benefits after my DH left me. I moved house, to a smaller one, made a profit. Was then over the, I think, £8000 threshold. I was allowed to spend money on essential stuff as long as I sent in all the reciepts to ss.
I had to have a damp course, re wiring, and roof fixed. But I also was allowed to buy some household goods, ie a cooker, as the previous one was built in. I also bought a cheap car.
My money was then gone and I continued to recieve benefits until I got a job.
The only thing is, I did ask them first whether this was allowed.
On the house I was in I had a huge mortgage, no transport, and miles from anywhere. I told them that I needed to be in a town where I could get a job that would support the mortgage.
I don't know if this is any help. Or if the rules have changed. But as I said, some essential expenditure was ok.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:
