Immersion Heater

Rob, do you fancy coming up to the Edinburgh meet on 1 Sept, discussed here as I sure could do with you as this Scottish person couldn't replace anything be it in an immersion, tank, cylinder or electric kettle :rotfl:
I have no hot water, that is how I realised the immersion heater/hot water tank/cylinder/whatever wasn't working, thats the easy bit!
I looked at the immersion heater switch, located in the kitchen with a timer on it and found there was no light so my beginner's guide to plumbing mind decided that it was caput
I then checked the fuse box and the fuse marked Immersion Heater (by the spark I might add) has not blown.
My hot water tank/cylinder is located in the very back of the attic way behind all the usual attic junk so I really also require a mountaineer to negotiate their way to check out this oh so easy replacement of an element
(perhaps at the same time I will get them to put up in the said attic the Christmas decorations which are lying in the hall below the attic hatch
)
Oh and yes the water coming out of the tap has been very hot

I was going to "leave it there" with post#3, but I'd just like to ask the board guide whether he/she thanked the poster for the first piece of poor (unqualified) advice or for the disguised swear word in his second post? - both of which are forbidden under board rules I believe.djohn2002uk wrote:Post #3 could so easily have led to a fatality with the potent mixture of electricity and lots of earthed pipework in close proximity.0 -

Don't worry Rob, I am easy confused too, its not just a Scottish thing you know
What I meant was that prior to having no hot water, I had very hot water!
YorkshireBoy, sometimes people thank people just for replying as I have done tonight for everyone who has taken the time to reply, it really is up to us as users what advice we take and use be it financial or diy. I think you will find that in the guidlines/rules too.
If you have a problem with a post, use the report button, thats what it is there for.0 -
Yorkshireboy,
Just to make it clear to you, I thanked the poster for replying to my query. He did not give any advice in that post.
I have never pretended to be a qualified tradesperson. I am a board guide, my position is to monitor posts to ensure that they are not offensive or illegal.
As for your last point, the disguised swear word.........I appreciate you pointing it out to me. I will rectify that.
If you have any further problems with my thanks or posts, please feel free to contact me by pm.

I spend more time on the "financial" boards at the top of the page, and only frequent this board occasionally. However, since I joined MSE I've been alarmed at the number of DIY electricians posting on this board - and had cause to correct more than one or two potentially dangerous "words of wisdom".Edinburghlass wrote:it really is up to us as users what advice we take and use be it financial or diy. I'm not sure I agree with you that it's up to the user to decide which advice to take and use when it's delivered (to the layman) in such a convincing, yet (to the professional) incorrect manner. When people ask for advice on the financial boards, they are usually directed to a credit cards T&C's or told to check out a comparison website etc. ie they have to research a little themselves.
However, if they get it wrong they might lose a few quid or, at worst, destroy their pension. Get it wrong with electricity and someone loses their property or their life!0 -

Which is precisely the reason why I asked Andrea to post the 'anouncement' at the top of 'In my Home' when I first became board guide of this board.

Yorkshireboy,
If you are ever, even remotely concerned by the safety of advice given in a post please contact abuse@moneysavingexpert.com
It's much better to be safe than sorry.

Now, perhaps we can get this thread back on topic and help solve Edinburghlass' immersion heater problem.
