In Paris l'entrepot charges 7 Euro (£5.30 or so) per ticket
Le Latina charges 8 Euro (£6.10) per ticket
UGC France charges 19.80 Euro (£15.10) per month for their unlimited pass

Both the first examples are at least comparable (if not slightly more expensive than many UK cinemas and the UGC unlimited pass costs more than the £11.99 a month that UGC used to charge before CIneworld took over and the £11.99 that Cineworld now charge. This hardly suggests that Britain is being ripped off, there will always be slight variations in price but for the majority of the UK these prices are comparable. People tend to cry rip off Britain before they really know if they're being ripped off at all, then go hunting for evidence afterwards.

I don't understand the "rip off Britain" lot.

I bet for every item/service you can find cheaper on the continent/the states I can find just as many that are more expensive. McDonalds/Starbucks already spring to mind, both cheaper in the UK than the States.

It's true, most people that use that expression do so without doing any proper research into price variations from country to country. They actually use it just because they like moaning!

If you really don't like Britain then why not just move? I plan to relocate within the next 5 years not due to cost of living but I'd prefer a warmer climate. You'll get the ones that say it's not easy etc etc but I bet you I manage it! Those sort of people would much rather stay here and pretend they're hard done by!

If some people devoted a fraction of their energy complaining about the price of fuel here , rather than cinema prices , then we'd all be better off .

Well I think you'll find lorry drivers did in Sep/Oct 2000. The country ran out of fuel for around a week.

So did they achieve lower fuel prices?

    No.

So if I devote a fraction of my time to complaining about fuel prices I don't think it will have much effect!

And people complaining on ehre won't change anything about cinema prices- have you all written to your local cinema to express your dis-satisfaction with the prices?

    You think that will work!?!?!
  • I really don't know what people are carping on about. This isn't a rip off, the cinema's haven't hidden any prices, they have simply charged what the market will stand. We make choices all the time as we live in a capitalist country, you spend what you have on what you want, you choose whether you want a DVD or the cinema or telly or a book. You choose to buy your clothes from Asda or Armani. I have heard that cinema's are very cheap in Cuba, don't know how many Hollywood films you'll get to see though.
You don't have to have sweets and popcorn during that 2 hour slot, lets face it in the scheme of things you don't need them at all.

Found this on the Cineworld website

Can I bring in my own food and drink?
Cineworld have a strict NO FOOD AND DRINK policy. We reserve the right to refuse customers entry into the screens with food or drink bought outside the premises. All our cinemas display the necessary signage, advising customers of this policy. As a food operator we offer a wide range of drinks and snacks to satisfy our customers but also protect our cinema finishes and customers clothing. Not all movie-goers are considerate of others in their snack choices and we have needed to set clearer guidelines on what is appropriate.

So they are a "food operator" for the purposes of this, although I think their reasoning is a little flawed.
What guidelines do they use to suggest that the food and drink they sell will not damage the fixtures and fittings. Wonder if I could get my cleaning paid for if I dropped my Revels onto a nice clean shirt? Anyway - they say they have a policy and that they will enforce it. So if they catch you tough they can chuck you out.

I wonder what there argument would be if you were to take in the same brand sweets & drinks as they sell? Surely there would be no breech of there "snack choice" guidelines!

......that really true now? Wow. I've only been to the States once but the prices were almost exactly the same in that something that was £1.99 here was $1.99 over there (and you got twice as much there of course:rolleyes: but lets not go down that obesity route). At the time the exchange rate was about £1 = $1.40, so the UK was 40% more expensive. There must have been a massive switch to change that. This isn't a rip-off Britain moan BTW, as far as I am concerned you just can't compare two different countries - it's like comparing house prices in different areas, totally meaningless!!

Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts
