Goldspanner I understand what you are saying but in this circumstance with the age of the car and maybe only keeping it one more year, it is best to keep costs down and I am happy to take a chance with second hand parts. So long as everyone knows where they stand its ok I think.
Anyway it transpires that even though the original mechanic told my son we needed a whole new headlamp unit, it seems we did not. The mechanic I hired just bolted it back in place as did they with the second one they said was insecure.
I got my MOT and though it cost me £78 more than I was expecting, fingers crossed the car goes on for one more year.:)Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

i understand that you didnt want new parts, but you cant really expect a garage to put thier reputation on used parts, a lot of people dont listen when you say used, they hear you saying new.then tell thier friends the you were useless, when that isnt the case.
im just trying to show it from the garages point, thats all....work permit granted!0 -

if i was asked to quote for a repair i would always quote new part prices and fit new parts, this way you have a comeback on your part supplier if it fails, but if it doesnt then you dont look bad to your customer.
Point taken - but it is the customers call at the end of the day and if it helps them out of a fix....
The secondhand parts we source are from two places that specialise in Japanese and they give 3 or 6 months guarantee on the parts, which is pretty fair. But as said, it is up to the customer - it makes no odds to us, in fact if they do choose the secondhand option, it means more running around for us to be honest - and we don't charge them for that! Which is why they use usGenie

We've been at it again today.... Sourced a brake caliper for an MR2 we had in, prob saved him 150 ish.
Its why we are always busy - customers know we really do care - and recommend us in person or on Toyota forums etc.
I sound like an advert.............
Here's an example I came across trying to find a rear wheel bearing for the wifes' car.
...
Rear wheel bearing on a Mitsi FTO. Have to replace the hub assembly apparently.
From Mitsubishi dealership...£390. I pointed out to them I could buy a lump of ally, get it machined and fit my own bearing for less.
From FTO Owners Club....£70. Was worth the £18 club membership just to save £300.0 -
