    Fee table here:

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_4022514

These are all MAXIMUM charges. Discounts are allowed, higher fees are NOT.

    Did you mean £50.35 ??

They do advise a price of around £50 but its up to the garage. We are fair and try and offer good deals for our customers.

We have a local breakers up the road and often contact them for parts to help customers out. We did it today - got an air flow meter for a Previa that was running like cr*p!!

Sadly headlamp units and the like don't usually survive on vehicles that are at the breakers!

We did once charge a customer half an hour labour during an MOT to change a headlamp bulb - can't remember what make of vehicle it was now, but we did have to remove battery and other bits and bobs (not very technical there!) to actually get to the bulb! They're not always easily accessible.

It does sound like you got a tad ripped off there. Sorry about that - hope you find a nice garage you can trust. Some of us are good! :D

You should always phone around for MOT prices, and free retest conditions. The very minimum free retest they have to offer is for 1 day assuming it fails on the items listed on the link I provided earlier if it fails on anything not listed there is no requirement for a free retest, but many are now starting to bring back the free retest.
If they don't offer a free retest they have to offer a half price test within 10 working days. (thanks for pointing that out jeannie, but if the garage is open on a Saturday, does that still not count as a working day?)

Not sure what happens if they claim there are no available slots

larmy16, have you got the paperwork now for the first test? What was the date?
  • If they're open on a Saturday, it will count. Depending on the nature of the failure they can do a fast track retest. If its brakes, then it will take longer. A good garage will squeeze you in somehow for a retest, we do - its not always easy as we are so busy all the time.

We don't like failing cars as we're so busy! Can be a headache to try and fit more work in! :D

Wig the first test was on 24th January 2008. So second test was today 19th Feb.

Sorry my memory is bad, so it was a lot more time between than I had thought.

Anyway that's the end of that particular saga!

Just looked at the description of work done.

    REPLACE NUMBER PLATE BULB
PARTIALLY REMOVE BUMPER AND REMOVE HEADLIGHT, REASSEMBLE AND ADJUST
    CARRY OUT MOT TEST.

I can't quite understand how you have to remove the bumper to deal with the headlight but there you go....
