Moving your Home Line Rental from BT.(WARNING)

If you use caller display(more and more people are these days), and you have,or are thinking of moving your line rental to another supplier.Think again.Because now that BT have waived the caller display charge of £1.75p a month you will probaly be paying more,as other suppliers still charge for caller display.

OneTel £1.50 a month.PO £1.75.Homecall £1.75.etc.

So the small saving d/d customers make eg £6 a year on the line rental.(none in the case of the PO) are wiped out and more.So those of you who have moved and use this facility would be better off moving your line rental back to BT.

Also there other benefits in keeping your line rental with BT many of which have been discussed in this forum at length.Eg Line Maintenance.1280 overide, access to cheaper carriers, cant support call sign.Premium rate barring etc.

I wonder if who ever thought of waiving the BT Caller Display charge, had more then privacy at home in mind?

For those of you who havent yet taken advantage of BT,s free caller display service (Privacy at Home) call 0800 916 55 44 to do so.

When BT introduced Caller Display the first thing I thought of was what you mentioned above. That and the fact in a few months they are raising their line rental by 50p and reducing the cost to WLR (Wholesale Line Rental) providers like OneTel, PO (PostOffice) and TalkTalk (when they get started), etc by 50p.

Eventually, the other providers are likely (reluctantly though) to follow BT and introduce caller display for nothing as well.

I was talking to a contact in TT earlier. The launch of there line rental sevice has been put back to August. They think its going to be £9.99p a month rental. They had no plans to offer free caller display, but are keeping an eye on the ball.BT caught them all on the hop.

This is a post I put elsewhere as I think it is something to think about too if switching your line rental from BT

I think the only point to think about now regarding switching line rental from BT is how long will it take for a supplier such as PO, Onetel, TalkTalk etc to get BT to fix a problem on a line where the line rental is not paid to BT.

Do all these new line rental suppliers have a compensation clause if your line is out of order for any length of time? I haven't looked into this but at least with BT you do get compensated if the problem is at their end and you are without a line or have a bad line.

It strikes me that BT are going to put customers who pay their line rental to another company to the back of the queue when it comes to repair or maintenance icon12.gif

No doubt that the new line rental suppliers will agree an appropriate service level with BT. That should mean that there will be no lengthy loss of service.

The new suppliers should be able to offer the same compensation arrangements as BT. The new supplier would surely be regarded as a customer of BT? Therefore if the service broke down or was inadequate in any of the ways described in BT's Compensation Scheme literature, then BT would have to make appropriate compensation to the new service provider. And the new service provider would then in turn be in a position to compensate its customer.

In addition, BT can hardly be accused of falling over itself to offer its customers compensation for loss or poor quality of service. Quite the reverse I think. BT will not mention the fact that there is a compensation scheme available, unless the customer presses them.

I believe that the most important point to consider is whether or not the new service provider will allow you to least cost route on its exchange lines.
