Hello ,
can somebody please advise me. I have just bought a 42 inch samsung plasma with home cinema kit from curry's. the sales man said that samsung offer a poor quality gaurantee and if the tele breaks down i could be left with out a tv for 6 weeks and the manufactor only offers a gaurantee for one year. but they offered for £8 a month an insurance plan that would replace the tele within 36 hour if anything went wrong with it including accidental damage. Am i just been ripped off and should the shop replace the item any way and am i covered for more than a year.

Ha.
What do you want the insurance for? You receive 1 years free guarantee right?
Your plasma screen is how much?
All tv's will depreciate overtime due to technology! Your tv will last around 5 years and by then it will be worth £200. 5 years later you will most likely purchase a new tv. How this helps.
Over 5 years, you will have spent £480 for the insurance. New TV?Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'

That seems very expensive! Is the Samsung guarantee free for the year? Rather than £96 for the Curry's guarantee... How long is the Curry's guarantee for? And would you be covered by your home contents insurance f anything went wrong?
Personally I don't trust shop guarantees as a general rule, I always assume they are trying to rip me off and provide good commission for the sales assisstant, but I may be wrong!
If you can cope with a smaller telly for 6 weeks (in the unlucky event anything does happen to the new one) , then I'd save your hard earned cash!Jan10: 28,315.81 Jan11: 18,015.32 Jan12: 7,682.58 Jan13: 2,987.73 Current debt: 1,225.55

I bought what could well be the same tv at christmas - i took the 5 year option that (if memory serves me) was 3 payments of £65.
the reasons behind me taking it were
1 - a friend at work had problems with their tv (still in gaurantee period) as was given a reconditioned tv as a replacement - apparantly the gaurantee does not mean you will get a new one.
2 - if one of the pixels went in 14 months I'd be well miffed
3 - most home insurance polices would cover accidental damage but not wear and tear - which if any pixels wore out it would come under.
4 - we have a dog and most insurers dont cover accidental damage caused by cats or dogs
5 - the cover gauranteed a new model, or new equivelant model if ours was out of production.
6 - i haggled with curries and got them to take the best part of £500 of the total i was paying for the tv, ps3, stand, cable, a couple of games and blu - ray discs, so in my mind I could convince myself i hadnt paid anything for it0 -

there seems logic in there but im still not convinced its worth all the money what you have sounds very much like what i have been offered.
does any body know if i am covered under any consumer rights to do with electrical items0 -
What, like the Sale of Goods Act?

Exactly. Many stores like you to think there is no comeback at all after the guarantee period, but this is simply not true.
OP, Personally, I wouldn't touch most high street retailers insurance with a barge pole. Unless they're going to throw it in for next to nothing, it's likely to be overpriced. Whether you need any insurance at all, is based on your assessment of risk. If you do opt for any such policy, check the exclusions and terms very carefully.0 -
Our 42" plasma has just gone bang ! Typically after the warranty has expired ! Two circuit boards have blown, EACH costing £250 to replace. We enquired about our rights with trading standards, they said that the onus is with us to prove that the item was faulty when we bought it and then we would have to "haggle it out" with Currys head office, which could take months ! Don't get me wrong, I do think that the extended warranty's they sell in the shops are a rip off, they wanted £500 for a three year warranty for our plasma. All I'm trying to say is that if plasma tv's go bang, then they can cost a pretty penny to fix, it's something to bear in mind !0

If John Lewis stock the TV you wanted, it may have been better buying from them, as they price promise to match local stores and offer a free 5 year warranty"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Unfortunatly dead pixels are not covered under warranty unless you get a cluster of them one or two wont be covered under warranty. check your handbook it will say its part of the manufacturing process(which we all know is bull) However dead pixels is not much of an issue any more.
As for samsung taking 6 weeks I would be amazed If your set actually went back to samsung its more likely to go to a samsung repair agent. Which to be honest may be mastercare which is owned by currys/comet.
the time it takes to repair of any electrical item is limited by the availabilty of spares and if the manufacturer doesnt have them in stock thats when you have to wait0
