This is a how long is a piece of string type question. You will get the Merc fans on one side and the Lexus fans on the other and everyone in between.

To be perfectly honest (but not really knowing) neither of them would float my boat, both seem expensive but have a look at Parkers or go onto the Glasses Guide via the Vauxhall website to see what they should be priced at.

What about leasing a car on a one or two year deal?

Mercedes have a poor reliability record in recent JD Power surveys. IMHO the Lexus is much better value.

    thanks cheesy mike,

Toyota own Lexus so yes, it is safe to say it is a Toyota engine. I'm not well up on Toyota these days because they don't make two-wheeled vehicles, but the best car I ever owned was a Toyota Landcruiser diesel. I did 90,000 miles in 2 years without a single fault or warranty claim. It only cost me (a huge amount of) fuel, tyres and servicing.

Lexus tops the JD Power charts year after year. Mercedes has improved in recent years, but around 2004 their performance was terrible. That's the era you are looking at buying one of their cars from.

Stick with the Japanese on this one - Lexus by far. Mercedes are not what they used to be. And nor are Lexus or any of them really, but Lexus are far far better these days than Mercedes.

Lexus, without a doubt - Mercedes don't buid their cars the way they used to buid their cars.

Plus you'll have much more customer friendly service from a Lexus dealer.

I'd avoid the dealers! Of course they're 'friendly' - you pay them enough!

    Find a good independent :D

at least the lexus dealers seem happy to tkae your cash, merc seem unhappy to take it,its as if its an inconvenience for merc.
as others have said mercs are nowhere near what they used to be,if you look closely at an old merc that has been looked after you will struggle to find any faults,my mate has a 230 clk convertible its rusting really badly considering its only 6 years old, dash display doesnt read properly.
really poor quality considering price new.
friends mum had a slk only 5 years old, sold it as it would need welding at next MOT!
