I wanted a plainish dress, but it's too plain. It might be just that I can't fasten it properly by myself so I can't really see how it looks, but I think I might have to rethink wearing it at all. It's also a bit more off-white than I was expecting. Maybe I just got a bit overexcited planning how it would look and now it can't live up to my ridiculous expectations.

I have a vintage ballgown that I could probably repair and alter if necessary. Must check that out.

Once its on, take some pics and see how you feel in it. If you are happy with everything else about it such as fit, shape, quality etc, is there any way of making it less plain? A contrasting sash, vintage brooch, beads/crystals/sequins sewn on, corsage added could make all the difference.

Put the pics on here if you don't mind too much and maybe we can help with suggestions.

Also I bet there are loads of seamstresses who would happily add detail to the dress to make it a bit more detailed without going too bling.

Which dress was it that you ordered by the way?

    I think that's stunning!

I'm sorry that you're initial reaction was not to love it but you're right - you can't really see what it looks like until someone gives you a hand to put it on. And I agree that you could always zuzh it up a bit if you wanted.

Don't give up on it just yet, hun....it really is a gloriously classy dress!

What do your female friends/family members think? It's wise to listen to their opinions as well as my own, I've found ;)

Did you try on the original before you ordered it? If not, then definitely try it on properly before giving up. The dress I ended up with (and love!) I didn't initially like. But as soon as I put it on, I knew it was the one.

Put it on, get a photo on here (minus head if you prefer!) and we can see more clearly as the pic from the link isn't too clear or detailed. We can then hopefully suggest ideas to to make it less plain.

Another thing is if you like the simpleness, is a tiara and/or veil with crystals. Plus with a bridal bouquet you may find that the simpleness of the dress brings it all together nicely.

    Thanks all :)

I'm taking it home next week to my mother and we'll figure something out with it - starting with a nicer ribbon lacing up the back and possibly including a low belt with some gold accents.

Failing that, I'm going to customise a vintage ballgown to fit the purpose. All is not lost!

I bought my wedding dress from an ebay seller in China 3 years ago cost me £60 including postage. Was great! the seller is no longer on there but I had no problems.

  • sugarspun i think that dress is lovely - it might feel plain looking at the bottom i guess, but the top really draws the attraction for me. I do think customising with a ribbon around as a belt may be a nice idea :)

Update: properly laced up and with a necklace it's absolutely stunning.

It's now at the seamstress being taken up a few inches because I clearly measured the length wrong. And it's gorgeous!!!
